There is really no deciphering what people will try to complain about. It can be so random that I have really stopped following along what the latest controversies are. Experience has taught me that if given enough time, like a kidney stone, this too shall pass. But recently, there has been a discussion about the fact that the new WB Looney Tunes have not armed Elmer Fudd. Really??
Needless to say, I am of that age where I grew up on the old Looney Tunes. I loved them all. Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, the list goes on and on. And while I realized that Elmer and Yosemite carried firearms, it didn’t really matter to me at all. The point was they were going to fail at whatever they were attempting anyway. Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck were going to get the best of them, regardless. It wasn’t like either of them ever hit anything anyways.
The guns were pretty much just props. The main thing was the conflict, the confrontation. I’m not sure what either Elmer or Yosemite would have done if they actually shot Bugs or Daffy. Probably cry like Elmer did in their operatic musical parody.
The fact that they decided to lose the guns is reflective of the time we live in now. Chances are, if things were different then, they might not have used guns at all. Besides, as Looney Tunes current writer Michael Ruocco Tweeted, pretty much any gag that could be done had already been done in the classic toons.
Do you guys SERIOUSLY care whether or not Elmer Fudd has a gun in our shorts? You know how many gags we can do with guns? Fairly few. And the best were already done by the old guys. It's limiting. It was never about the gun, it was about Elmer's flawed, challenged masculinity.

Despite the controversy, it hasn’t changed the fact that the new Looney Tunes have proven to be very popular since appearing on HBOMax. Quite frankly, I could care less whether they use guns or not. It was never about the guns as far as I am concerned. But I understand the reluctance in the current climate. Just so they don’t take away Wile E. Coyote’s ACME membership card. Where else will he get rockets, explosives, and other such things? All to catch a bird without an ounce of meat on him. If he used the money he spent at ACME he could buy a butcher shop!
