Judd Apatow’s latest film, which stars Pete Davidson; The King of Staten Island won’t get a theatrical release. Instead, it will be released on VOD on June 12th. Originally, it was meant to hit the movie theaters on June 19th.
The King of Staten Island is a comedy that is based on Davidson’s life, which he co-wrote with director Apatow. During a video conference between the two, Davidson asked Apatow about the film’s status:
“Dude, what is going on with our movie? Am I still going to get an Oscar?”
Apatow revealed he hadn’t heard from Universal in regards to the movie:
“I don’t think you’re going to get an Oscar if it doesn’t come out. Can we make a DVD and sell it in Times Square, like old school? What if we put it on demand? Cause I just ran out of stuff and I just watched all the Look Who’s Talking movies and ran out of stuff to watch.”
Apatow then rang Universal and told Davidson:
“They’re into it…so don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret, they’re going to do some fancy announcement.”
Davidson plays Scott in the film. Scott’s been in trouble since the age of seven, when his firefighter dad passed away. Having achieved little throughout his life, he’s in his twenties and has a dream of becoming a tattoo artist. His sister, played by Maude Apatow; is ambitious and goes to college, all while Scott still lives with his mother, who is played by Marisa Tomei and is an ER nurse. Currently just spending his days getting high, Scott gets a push to evaluate his life and confront his grief when his mother begins dating a “loudmouth firefighter” named Ray who is played by Bill Burr.
