That was the hope when The Power Rangers made a return to the big screen with the release of Paramount’s live-action reboot. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t prove to be as financially successful as they had projected as it grossed just $142 million worldwide. With original plans to make up to seven sequels, it was looking doubtful they would do even one without another reboot.
After that disappointing box office performance, Power Rangers did create a strong following on home release and with that encouragement, it gave Paramount and Hasbro a chance to rethink the plan. This looked less than likely when Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers property, but Power Rangers 2 now looks to be in development.
As reported by “Inside Licensing,” Paramount and Hasbro’s All Spark Pictures are going to develop another Power Rangers movie as a sequel to the 2017 film. Hasbro is seemingly banking on the talented young cast reputations to continue to rise. With young actors like Dacre Montgomery and Naomi Scott, Paramount and Hasbro are hoping to attract a young and energized audience.
It is not unfair to ask why a decision had been made to make this sequel considering the poor performance of the 2017 film. From Hasbro’s end, the answer reason could be the toy sales. As is often the case, toy sales went though the roof last year on Power Ranger toys after the release. Even if they sequel under performs, the money made through merchandising might make it worth the price of the sequel, especially if they can keep the budget reasonable.
As of this time, this sequel is in the very early stages so no estimate has been made on possible release schedules or if Director Dean Israelite will be brought back. In addition, due to their upcoming filming schedules, the young cast will have busy schedules that will need to be worked around.
