From Tom DeSimone, cult director of Hell Night, The Concrete Jungle and Reform School Girls, comes Prison Girls—“The First Real Adult Film in 3-D!” Six female prisoners are given a weekend furlough in preparation for their upcoming parole. While out, the groovy jailbirds have miscellaneous sexual experiences—some good, some bad, some downright shocking! The irresistible cast includes Jacqueline Giroux (To Live and Die in L.A.), Uschi Digard (Supervixens), Candy Samples (Flesh Gordon), Annik Borel (Werewolf Woman), Tracy Handfuss (A Clockwork Blue), Maria Arnold (Meatcleaver Massacre) and Linda York (A Scream in the Streets). Video Quality
Prison Girls makes its Blu-Ray debut courtesy of Kino Classics with a brand new 1080p transfer from a new restoration by the 3-D Archive. This disc offers both 2-D and 3-D versions of the film. You get two 3-D viewing options: 3-D polarized and 3-D anaglyphic (red/cyan), the latter of which you can view with the included 3-D glasses. My current equipment does not allow me to review the 3-D polarized version, but the 3-D anaglyphic was viewed to the best of my abilities. Even with the 3-D glasses placed on top of my regular glasses, the 3-D effects were quite a sight considering how they are implemented within the narrative. The presentation makes good use of depth in every scene, but mostly you will just find these naked people fornicating in the middle of your living room. The 2-D option reveals the limitations of the restoration much more, making the 3-D version the way to experience this if at all possible.
Judging the transfer outside of the perspective of 3-D, this restoration still looks quite rough due to the quality of the source material. Consistent deficiencies remain after the cleanup, but the 3-D Archive obviously did what they could with these old prints. It is not so much that there is consistent damage, but the base quality of the film is just not sharp and detailed. You can still spot these individuals in all of their glory, but it firmly looks like this was made in the early ‘70s on a low budget. There is not a lot of fine texture to appreciate from scene to scene. The film grain has at least not been hit with DNR so it retains its natural quality. Black levels are not the most robust with instances of black crush on display. While we obviously would like this to look miraculously clear, this is still a great presentation for this one.
Audio Quality
The Blu-Ray comes with a fair DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track that handles the material as well as the source will allow. Like the video side of the equation, it does not appear as if this film was captured with top of the line recording equipment. This track does present a small amount of age related wear and tear and some faint hissing, but it holds up better than expected. The music can sound a bit warbly and thin, but this likely dates back to the age and condition of the source elements. Dialogue and environmental noises are presented mostly in harmony with only a handful of exchanges struggling for prominence. Kino Classics has provided a passable track for this one. There are optional English (SDH) subtitles included for the feature film.
Special Features
- Audio Commentary: Horror-Flix.com’s James G. Chandler and Ash Hamilton deliver a fine commentary track which mostly avoids being skeezy considering they are giving an overview on softcore porn. You get some brief history about the 3-D filming process and technology before delving more into the film at hand, the performers and more while keeping a light atmosphere.
- Deleted Scene (2-D Only): A six-minute unused scene is provided here in 2-D which involves two girls and a man who clearly misses the golden days of nursing.
- Trailer: The two-minute 2-D trailer is provided for Prison Girls.
Final Thoughts
Prison Girls is simply your standard adult film from the ‘70s with a 3-D element slapped onto it to make it somewhat unique. Not that we are coming to this one for plot, but there are some elements of sexual assault which could have been left out if we are going for fooling around and good vibes. Due to the filming capabilities of the 3-D camera, you get a lot of stationary medium shots of the sex scenes, so don’t expect anything flashy. This journey is just a series of attractive women stripping down and getting to business (shower scenes, pairs, group play). As noted in the commentary track, the creative figures cast many amply endowed women to take full advantage of the 3-D technology, so have fun with that if it sounds good to you. Kino Classics has delivered a Blu-Ray release that shows off a decent A/V presentation complete with 3-D options and a couple nifty special features.
Prison Girls is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD.
