‘GalaxyCon Raleigh’: What to Expect, Pt. 1

So now that SDCC has completed, and we digest all the Geek goodness we received over the last weekend, that doesn’t mean there isn’t more ComicCon fun to be had. On the contrary, the ball is just starting to roll as more and more events are on the horizon. This weekend in fact, we have the GalaxyCon Raleigh coming to the Raleigh Convention Center from July 25th-July 28th. While it is not chocked full of the celebrities that appeared at the SDCC, that doesn’t mean there aren’t great things to see and do and people to meet. Here are just some of the highlights:

Television:

For fans of The Office you have Leslie Baker, Creed Batton, and Kate Flannery.

If you are a fan of the original Hellboy films, or fans of the TV series The Sons of Anarchy, and well before that Beauty and the Beast, you have Ron Perlman appearing. For those of you who are MacGyver fans, you have the original version Richard Dean Anderson. He has also appeared in StarGate-SG1 and StarGate:Atlantis.

TV and Film:

Dr. Who or Harry Potter fans have David Tennant who played the 10th Dr. Who and also played Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Classic iconic character actor Tim Curry will be there. Curry has been in such diverse projects as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue, Home Alone 2, as the original Pennywise from IT, and so many more. (Be aware, because of health issues, there are specific circumstances for Tim’s appearance and the times he is available. Reference the Raleigh GalaxyCon website for details.)

Fans of 80’s films will recognize Anthony Micheal Hall and John Cusack. Hall appeared in the classic 80’s films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science. Recently he had a cameo appearance in Marvel’s Agents of Shield as Kitson. Cusack appeared in the 80’s films Say Anything, Better Off Dead (one of my personal favorites) and The Sure Thing. He also appeared in Grosse Pointe Blank and Con-Air with Nicholas Cage.

Music and Film:

For music fans, they have musician/actor Meatloaf whose 70’s debut album Bat Out of Hell topped the charts at that time. He has acted in roles for the aforementioned Rocky Horror Picture Show, Wayne’s World, Fight Club, and more.

Star Trek:

Star Trek fans have from Star Trek: TNG – Director/Actor Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Riker), and  Wil Wheaton (Ensign Wesley Crusher) who also appeared in the classic Stand by Me in his youth. For fans of Star Trek the Original Series, they have iconic Star Trek actor George Takei.

Frakes is a busy man these days as he not only will direct two episodes of Patrick Stewart’s Picard, it was recently announced that he and fellow actor Marina Sirtis ( Counselor Deanna Troi) will make an appearance in Stewart’s new show. The last time we saw Riker and Troi, they had just gotten married in Star Trek: Nemesis and Riker was made Captain of the U.S.S. Titan.

Many More:

Others appearing at GalaxyCon include Billy Zane, who has appeared in Titanic as well as the classic hero The Phantom. In fact, it was recently suggested by one of our great fans that Billy should play Lex Luther. When I see him, I’ll ask if that is a role he would be interested in. Or if you are going, you could ask him yourself. We are flexible here at GeekVibesNation. In addition there is Daphne Zuniga who appeared in the aforementioned The Sure Thing as well as Mel Brooks’ iconic Spaceballs as Princess Vespa.

This is just a sampling of the Celebrities appearing at the GalaxyCon Raleigh. There is so much more. There are classic wrestling stars as well as comic book legends (my personal favorites). In addition, there are Cosplay, games, panels, the fun goes on and on. We will cover some of these in the next post.

Are you planning on making a visit to the GalaxyCon Raleigh? If so, you will have a great time and meet some of the nicest people you could hope to talk to. Oh, If you see some guy in a GeekVibesNation ComicCon shirt, stop and say hello. Chances are, it’s me.
