An island paradise becomes a scarred paradise lost in the spectacular South Seas adventure Rapa-Nui, co-produced by Kevin Costner, and directed by Kevin Reynolds. Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) and Esai Morales (La Bamba) play boyhood friends turned fierce rivals in this tumultuous tale of love and war. Each loves the same woman (Sandrine Holt of Black Robe) – and each intends to win her in marriage by competing for the island leadership in a genuine tribal contest.

Video Quality
Rapa-Nui gets a fantastic upgrade on Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Archive with a new 1080p transfer derived from a 4K restoration from preservation elements. This South Seas feature captures the vast beauty of the landscape which the transfer realizes thanks to natural film grain free of any compression artifacts or other such digital anomalies. This disc perfectly represents the shooting locations with the clarity and complexity you desire. There are elements in the environments that are easily visible for the first time ever on home entertainment. Skin tones are nuanced and consistent, and the presentation offers up robust black levels free from crush. There are some miraculous colors that enrich the film in a visceral manner. Warner Archive typically releases films much older than this one, but we are thrilled to see this one given such a carefully handled transfer.
Audio Quality
Warner Archive gives this Blu-Ray a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix that represents this movie well. Despite being a largely interpersonal tribal drama, there are some impressive environmental effects such as the waves of the ocean or yelling from the different members of the tribe during the contest. The score from Stewart Copeland sounds terrific as it delivers every note with perfect fidelity. Dialogue stays grounded in the center channel for most of the film, but it extends to the surround speakers when necessary. This audio presentation is a top-tier effort for the film. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided on this disc.

Final Thoughts
Rapa-Nui is a thrilling historical drama that largely capitalizes on its ambition despite not quite reaching the heights of other such dramas from the time period. The deficiencies mostly come from the script, but the film makes up for it when it comes to the craft and scale of the experience. The three main leads do a fine job of bringing their characters to life, especially the intense portrayal from Esai Morales. This does not seem to have made a big impression when it was first released, so it is great that it is getting another chance. Warner Archive has released a Blu-Ray featuring a fantastic A/V presentation and not much in the way of special features. If you have yet to see this one, definitely make time for it. Recommended
Rapa-Nui can be purchased directly through MovieZyng or through various other online retailers.
