The cult classic is now on 4K for the first time in a stunning remaster approved by director Darren Lynn Bousman. In the not-so-distant future, a worldwide epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GENECO, a biotech company that offers organ transplants…for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession — and hunted by the REPO man.

Repo! The Genetic Opera debuts on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a 2160p/Dolby Vision presentation in 1.85:1 derived from a new 4K remaster approved by director Darren Lynn Bousman. We have never seen the movie before, so we cannot definitively gauge the level of improvement of this release, but everything appears pretty great to our eyes. The accompanying Blu-Ray likewise looks quite nice, as it has been updated with the new master and supplemental features, and it is not a recycling of the original 2009 Blu-Ray. The 4K UHD presentation allows this film to achieve its aesthetic intentions in the most satisfying manner possible.
One of the important things to note with this film is its combination of being shot digitally early-ish in the format and the film having a heavily stylized look that makes the film appear otherworldly and dreamlike. The new 4K presentation provides an admirable depth of field throughout these meticulously curated tableaus. This transfer unveils a terrific amount of detail in distinct facets of the production design, costumes, and gory makeup effects. Skin tones appear to be consistent throughout and show a terrific amount of facial detail, including makeup, prosthetics, and blood splatter.
The other major benefit of this format is the implementation of Dolby Vision for greater accuracy and stability. The 4K UHD Blu-Ray thrives with exceptionally deep black levels as digital noise is nearly completely absent from the screen. With so much of this narrative taking at night or in shadows, you run the risk of crush and banding overtaking the screen, which it occasionally does in the standard Blu-Ray presentation. The film is stylized to have harsh and overblown highlights in certain lighting situations, yet this presentation makes sure we are only seeing the purposeful blooming and nothing out of sync with the creative vision. The world of Repo! is downright dingy and cyberpunky, but you can still bask in the vibrant hues in certain locales and sequences. This 4K UHD is sure to please fans who want an accurate representation of the feature that looks the best it ever has.
Audio Quality
This disc gets an upgrade with an exquisite Dolby Atmos presentation that capitalizes on all the important qualities that make a rock opera a rock opera. Not surprisingly, the music is the star, yet the track earns major props for the clarity it brings to the experience when other elements are introduced. The sound design can be quite ambitious, with sounds of the imaginative environments springing forth in tandem with the music so nothing gets buried. Things dig deep in the low end with some of the violent confrontations, but most will feel activity coming from the music.
The mix here is tastefully expanded with significant engagement of all the channels, so those with a proper system should be pleased. Vocals are delineated and presented clearly without ever being overshadowed by any of the competing sonic elements. This track is often immersive with numerous moments engaging the height channels. Sounds are carefully deployed with careful attention paid to directionality. Every note of the music holds up with top-notch fidelity. Lionsgate has come through for fans of the film. Optional English, English SDH, and Spanish subtitles are provided.

Final Thoughts
Repo! The Genetic Opera might be the very definition of a big swing, and we admire the way in which it mixes sincerity with the grotesque. Operas, and that includes rock operas, were designed to channel big emotions, and those emotions are no less valid if they are from the perspective of a serial killer or a surgically modified abomination of nature. The singing in Repo! is not always great, but, at the very least, it feels authentic. Yet that is partially what keeps us from embracing this film as a newcomer to the material—the songs do not grab us enough at first blush to keep us on the rails of this messy journey. Nevertheless, we are drawn in by the ambition of the piece, and it is engaging enough for us to want to return to it in the future to hopefully gain more from it. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released a 4K UHD Blu-Ray that sports an amazing A/V presentation and a tremendous number of special features in lovely SteelBook packaging. If you love the movie, this is the way to own it. Recommended
