Following 15-year-old Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), Stargirl takes place a decade after the fall of the Golden Age of Heroes, that of course being marked by the Justice Society of America or JSA. Courtney and her mother move from California to Nebraska with her new stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), who is the former sidekick to Starman (Joel McHale) – a former member of the JSA. Courtney believes that enrolling in a new High School along with making new friends will be the biggest challenge she has faced thus far, but little does she know that it will actually be one of the easier tasks in the weeks and months to come. Courtney soon finds out that life for her as she knew it will drastically change as she finds the staff of Starman in the basement of their new home.
This staff is said to choose its next successor and it choose her. Courtney immediately finds out that wielding power is more then what she had expected, she slowly learns how use this new found power she even designs her own costume from Star mans remaining pieces of the suit he died in. Courtney quickly learns with new power comes new foes as she takes on Brainwave as he tries to snuff out this new power, We see Pat Dugan when he finds out Courtney has the staff he immediately suits up to stop Courtney from getting her self hurt. We see Stargirl truly shine and take down her first villain but quickly learns there are many many more out there looking to take her out.
This show builds its amazing first few episodes by balancing what high school is like and what superhero life is like and we get a great look at Courtney’s experience in both worlds as she struggles to adjust to the new life in a new town and her new found power, luckily for her she has her stepdad Pat Dugan by her side as she decides it’s time to start a new JSA, Icicle and more are just waiting to take her out in this small town that’s corrupt from top to bottom.
I’d say this show is 5/5 and seeing Geoff Johns baby brought to life is amazing and can’t wait to see how this season finishes.
