Review: Lovecraft Country Episode Two – Whitey’s on the Moon

In ‘Lovecraft Country,’ we start with a lively scene cutting back and forth between Leti and Uncle George having a good time looking through there rooms with the song ‘Moving On Up.’ There is a significant change in tone between the last Episode ‘Sundown’ and this first scene. But that tone quickly goes back when we go into Atticus’s room. That quick change in tone is weird at first, but you suddenly realize there is a reason for that within the episode.

It turns out that Leti and Uncle George forgot what happened the night before they arrived at the Ardham Lodge. Writer, Misha Green, did a great job with the mystery element within this episode. Throughout ‘Whitey’s On the Moon,’ I found myself trying to figure out everything before it happens. Some moments I did figure out, and there were other moments I could not figure out, but most importantly, it kept me thinking, and that is good writing.

During this episode, Uncle George was the glue that kept the team together and the reason why he is such a great character. That scene after Leti, Atticus, and Uncle George had those illusions. Uncle George was the one that saw through his fantasy and kept Leti and Atticus in check after what they experienced. Alongside the mystery element of this episode, having Episode two of ‘Lovecraft Country’ Focused on the biblical perspective with Samuel Braithwaite trying to get back to the Garden of Eden and having Atticus a vital part of that felt fresh.

You know when an episode is terrific when you want the next episode, ASAP; giving answers but at the same time, providing even more questions to keep you invested with the show. Why are cows giving birth to those vampires like entities? What makes Atticus and his mother’s bloodline important to the lore of the whole show? These are just some questions that the show provides that I hope are answer by the end of this season.

Overall, Episode two of Lovecraft Country is another success. If this continues, this will be in my top five show of HBO Max. Let me know what your thoughts were on this latest episode in the comments below.
