For those fans of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes movies, it sounds like the popular actor has begun getting back into character as Sherlock Holmes for the third movie in the Sherlock Holmes film series.
Downey tweeted out a GIF of himself from one of the two previous Sherlock Holmes movies, writing “Practicing my Sherlock face.”

In the series thus far, Downey plays Sherlock alongside Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, the two heroes from Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective stories. Rumor has it that the third film could begin filming in late 2018, so if that schedule were to be accurate, it would certainly make sense that Downey would begin preparing for the role. At this time, the third film in the series is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2020.
Chris Brancato is writing the film’s script. Guy Ritchie, who directed the two previous installments of the series, is expected to return for the third film.
Downey and Law’s first crack at the iconic sleuths was with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes in 2009. The film was well-received by fans and critics and earned $524 million worldwide. Downey’s performance was recognized by the Golden Globes for his performance as Holmes, and the film was nominated for two Academy Awards.
The sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, soon followed in 2011. This sequel followed a plot that borrowed elements from Doyle’s classic Sherlock Holmes stories “The Final Problem” and “The Empty House.” The second film received Was not as widely praised as the first but still went on to make $545 million worldwide.
The success of the first two films made the idea of a third film a foregoned conclusion, but there has been has been changes to the screenwriting duties on multiple occasions over the year. With the many delays encountered, it became unclear if Warner Bros. was still interested in pursuing the sequel.
However, in late 2016, Warner Bros. was said to have come up with a new script and it wasn’t until earlier this year that Warner Bros. placed the film on their schedule for 2020. It only then that they announced Bracanto as the film’s screenwriter.
So now that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it appears that Sherlock Homes 3 is finally going to happen, are you excited to hear that Downey may once again take on the role as Sherlock Holmes? Once production begins, we will finally know, “the games afoot!”
Sherlock Holmes 3 is scheduled for theatrical release on Dec. 25, 2020.
