All his life, people have told Rudy he’s not good enough, not smart enough, not big enough. But nothing can stop his impossible dream of playing football for Notre Dame. From the time he’s a young boy, Rudy (Sean Astin) is determined to join the Fighting Irish. But his blue-collar family only laughs at his ambitions – they know Rudy will follow his father and brothers to the local steel mill. And, for four long years after high school, he does just that. But some dreams won’t die, as Rudy proves when he goes to heroic, occasionally hilarious, lengths to win admission to Notre Dame. Once there, he becomes a walk-on player, serving as little more than a human tackling dummy against the starting players. Bloodied but unbeaten, Rudy wins the respect of legendary coach Ara Parseghian and the other Irish players, who give him one shot at gridiron glory. An incredible true story from the creators of Hoosiers, RUDY is an unforgettable testament to the power of dreams and the triumph of the common man.

    Video Quality

The new 30th Anniversary 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Rudy offers a fantastic uptick in quality over the included Blu-Ray from Sony all the way back in 2008. That release was not that impressive at the time, and time has only proven the disc to be weaker as expectations have been elevated. The film has never reached the blissful heights of this remarkable presentation. This new release is derived from a 4K restoration in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio approved by director David Anspaugh in 2160p HDR/Dolby Vision. This new release features both the original Theatrical Cut and the all-new Director’s Cut in 4K via seamless branching. Sony is one of the best labels in the 4K UHD game these days, and they have pulled out all of the stops for this release which ranks as one of their best.

This new transfer sports a picture that has the perfect amount of glorious film grain that resolves without any unnatural texture. There are certain conditions such as the snowy landscapes which would seemingly be more difficult to resolve, but at no point does the presentation foul up the picture with loose grain or unsightly banding. As usual, Sony has stayed away from any digital manipulation on this transfer, so this disc is free of DNR, compression artifacts, and other encoding issues. The period production design, clothing, and landscapes are presented with absolute clarity and favorable texture. In every unique location, you will find an array of subtle details that are newly visible thanks to the 4K resolution. The details during the game are simply stunning to behold with everything rendering without any issues.

A highlight of this transfer is the implementation of Dolby Vision/HDR. The color palette is radiant and bright throughout with the autumnal vibes allowing for a very nuanced visual presentation. Colors are far more distinct, natural, and accurate to what was intended by the creative team. The visuals are especially a treat during the holiday scenes with brilliant lights on the Christmas tree and throughout the house. The command over the contrast is notable throughout when it comes to the different environments. Black levels maintain a deep and satisfying look with complex detail in the shadows while the highlights present as more crisply defined with no instances of blooming to be found. Skin tones appear way more distinct and natural than the previous Blu-Ray with healthy doses of fine detail apparent on faces. This is an unbelievable upgrade that will give audiences a new appreciation for the material.

    Audio Quality

This 4K UHD Blu-Ray enhances the audio with a Dolby Atmos track for both cuts of the film giving it a more all-encompassing soundscape that opens up the environment. Audio purists should breathe easily, as the 4K UHD Blu-Ray provides the original soundtrack in glorious lossless DTS-HD 5.1 and 2.0 Master Audio stereo (Theatrical Only). All of your choices on the 4K UHD get the most out of this soundscape, and we remain grateful that Sony is one of the companies who realize original audio should be a choice for fans who want it while still delivering something special for audiophiles. The original DTS-HD 2.0 track is understandably not quite as immersive as the Atmos track, but it handles the material every bit as flawlessly as you would hope.

This film is far from an action-packed tale, but it feels the benefits of an Atmos track that delights from the first note. The iconic Jerry Goldsmith score conjures up passionate emotions for audiences, never coming up short when it comes to fidelity. Dialogue is rendered clearly without ever getting drowned out by the music or sound effects. Atmospheric sound effects such as the roar of a crowd are rendered carefully within the mix so that directionality is never an issue. Environmental activity extends to the surrounds, rears, and overhead speakers to make the world feel more spacious and immersive. The sounds up above most notably handle environmental effects. The low-end effects from the subwoofer add a bit of light texture to a few moments to bolster to the experience. Sony offers up audio perfection for consumers of this new release. There are optional English, English SDH, French, Spanish, and an array of other subtitles included.

    Special Features

Sony has provided Rudy with a sleek SteelBook featuring artwork that is truly lovely in person. The front artwork features Rudy standing on the field at Notre Dame, and the rear features the iconic image of Rudy being lifted up by his teammates. The interior sports a still of Rudy suited up for the big game. Video of the SteelBook can be found at the top of this review.

    • Theatrical Cut (1:54:00) and Director’s Cut (2:07:18)
    • Audio Commentary (Director’s Cut): Director David Anspaugh and Screenwriter Angelo Pizzo provide a steady and informative commentary track in which they reflect upon the production of the film, experiences on set, obstacles they faced, memories of the performers, the film’s legacy, the new moments in the Director’s Cut and more. This can devolve into them silently watching the film at points, but for the most part, they fill the space
    • Deleted Scenes: Five unused scenes totaling three minutes are provided here featuring more moments with the family, a reflective moment at the stadium, and more. Some scenes are provided without audio.
    • Theatrical Trailer: The two-minute theatrical trailer is provided here.

    Final Thoughts

Rudy is one of the sports movies that has been elevated into a pantheon of emotional tales beloved by audiences across generations. The theme of not giving up on your dream no matter what touches on something very human and heartfelt. The film is held together thanks to the flawless performance of Sean Astin, who makes you love the character even when he is seemingly delusional. Outside of this, it helps that the film is carefully assembled with all of the craft elements coming together to create a rousing experience. Sony Pictures has released a splendid new 4K UHD Blu-Ray in celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary featuring a flawless A/V presentation and a great selection of special features. The release even comes with a new Director’s Cut that brings in even more wonderful character development. This should be considered an essential upgrade for fans of the film. Recommended

Rudy is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray SteelBook and Digital.
