Sean Astin Discusses The Possibility of a ‘Goonies’ Sequel

In the current landscape where studios are frequently taking older popular films or franchises and looking to reintroduce them to a new audience, there is one film that fans have been clamoring for a sequel to since it’s original appearance back in 1985, The Goonies.

As you might remember, The Goonies which was directed by Dick Donner, starred Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, and a young Josh Brolin before he grew up into Thanos. They, along with some other young actors, played a group of young misfits who call themselves The Goonies. They discover an ancient map and set out on a quest to find a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure to help save Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand’s (Josh Brolin) Family home.

Ever since then, fans have wondered if there would ever be a sequel to the now cult classic. As it turns out, Sean Astin has wondered too. He had previously expressed an interest in revisiting the film and really thought it would be a matter of when and not if. But as the years have gone on, he see’s the possibility of a sequel with members of the original cast as unlikely, but he wouldn’t mind if they decided to do a reboot. He expressed his thoughts on the matter with Collider when promoting his recent project No Good Nick on NetFlix.

For 20 years, my answer to the question was an unequivocal yes, there will be a sequel — it’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when. Just certainty. Well…that’s gone. Now I think we’ve probably passed the threshold for which all of us original cast members are right for doing a sequel. But the audience is so powerful and so devoted to it, that I’m convinced that at the very least, it will be rebooted, which I will be fine with. If it’s not as good as the original Goonies, that’s fine, who cares? I think Spielberg has been waiting for whatever that magical, mystical secret sauce is and he hasn’t found it yet so he just hasn’t pulled the trigger yet. He’s so busy so I don’t even know if he could do it himself and you know, Dick Donner wants it.

Would you like to see a long awaited sequel, or more likely, a reboot of The Goonies? Share your thought with us at GVNation and all the other Goonies. Maybe together we can tell the studios…
