Simu Liu in Shang-Chi from Marvel Studios

Marvel is ramping up excitement for Avengers: Doomsday, but Simu Liu has already spilled some major news: his character Shang-Chi will appear not just in Doomsday, but also in the epic follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor confirmed his involvement in both massive crossover events, marking a long-awaited live-action return for the Master of the Ten Rings since his 2021 solo debut.

Simu Liu’s Exciting Confirmation for Avengers: Secret Wars

Speaking about his MCU future, Liu said:

“There’s not a whole lot to tease right now… but it is happening [referring to Shang-Chi 2]. But I think the more immediate tease is of course, is [Avengers:] Doomsday. Yeah, which comes out next year, which I was lucky enough to be a part of and will be lucky enough to be a part of its successor in Secret Wars.”

Liu also shared glowing remarks about his time filming Doomsday, highlighting new friendships formed on set—particularly shouting out Channing Tatum as “one of my favorite human beings.”

Why This Matters for the MCU Post-Endgame

Since Avengers: Endgame, the MCU has faced challenges with mixed critical and box office reception. However, Phases 4-6 introduced standout new heroes like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu).

One common fan criticism? Many of these fresh characters haven’t returned soon enough. Doomsday and Secret Wars aim to fix that by assembling a huge roster, giving neglected heroes like Shang-Chi their spotlight alongside veterans and newcomers.

    Update on Shang-Chi 2 Sequel

Liu provided a positive, if vague, update on the long-awaited Shang-Chi 2: “There’s not a whole lot to tease right now, other than I think, I sound like a broken record at this point, but it is happening.”

With Avengers: Secret Wars wrapping up Phase 6 in 2027, the earliest realistic window for a sequel appears to be 2028—potentially kicking off Phase 7 strongly, especially if the film includes a multiversal reset and greater X-Men integration.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
