Over the past seventeen years, this Nickelodeon cartoon has been a source of memes, pop culture references, and memorabilia. Now, it seems that we are getting a thirteen-episode prequel series that features Spongebob at the age of ten. Kamp Koral (which is a working title) is about a young Spongebob away at sleepaway camp.
This first-ever spin-off of Spongebob Squarepants under new Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins gets the green light and will begin production in June. We’ll see Spongebob and friends building underwater campfires, catching jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck in Kamp Koral. The style will be CG-animated.
Ramsey Naito, the EVP of Animation Production and Development, stated:
“SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world.”
This pickup is on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the original series debut, which will be marked with Best Year Ever, which is a tribute that will include a one-hour special, Spongebob’s Big Birthday Blowout. The special premieres July 12th.
What do you think about the concept behind Kamp Koral? Let us know!
