Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo behind hit films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and the upcoming EndGame have become an incredibly important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While creating this universe the Russo brothers have grown quite close to Stan Lee over the years, and now they’ve decided to show their love to the late icon with their latest project.
The Russo’s have been making their rounds to promote the release of Avengers: Endgame, which finally hits theaters next week. While on these rounds, they have been having to dodge questions left and right, as to not spoil the movie fans. The Russo’s have recently revealed they are working on a documentary project that will honor the legend Stan Lee. Here’s what Anthony Russo had to say about it:
“We love Stan Lee and I think it’s incredibly special that Endgame will be his final cameo. We are fascinated by the life of Stan Lee and we are actually developing a little something that has to do with his work in the history of Marvel. But we are not ready to present it or talk about it yet. It’s more of a documentary.”
This is a vague but potentially very exciting statement. Stan Lee is synonymous with the name Marvel. Lee has co-created some of the most iconic characters in pop culture, working with artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. Some of the characters include the likes of Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, Black Panther and many many more. Lee also was the public face of Marvel for many years, even before the movies.
Lee also influenced generations of creatives, such as the Russo brothers. Stan Lee unfortunately passed away last November. As mentioned, Avengers: Endgame will be Lee’s final cameo, which only bolsters the importance of the movie. It makes sense Marvel Studios would want to make a documentary to honor Lee’s life and his work, and why not have the Russos do it? Joe and Anthony Russo have done a lot for the MCU and fans. The duo clearly have a great understanding and love for Lee’s characters and want to honor him in an appropriate fashion.
For now, it is a guess what form this project will take. Will this be a docuseries for the Disney+ streaming service or an extended documentary feature on Endgame’s Blu-ray when that gets released? Is this going to be a standalone, feature-length movie?
All we can do is speculate and theorize, but whatever this project ends up being, it seems to be in capable and caring hands. How would you like to see Stan Lee’s life portrayed and honored? What was your favorite Stan Lee cameo? Let us know in the comments!
