‘Star Trek Discovery’ Reveals Their New Look Talosians

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”16790″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Way back in 1965, Gene Roddenberry has an idea for show that was different than most space shows. He described his show as a “Wagon Train to the Stars.” When NBC agreed to a pilot, they produced The Cage, which starred Jeffery Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, Majel Barrett as No.1, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock, his half-Human, half Vulcan science officer. The first pilot dealt with their encounter with a race called the Talosians, who had great telepathic abilities. After screening it, NBC was not happy with the pilot as they considered it too cerebral for the general public and they were not that excited about the character of Spock. In an unusual move, NBC requested a second pilot. Jeffery Hunter was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict so Roddenberry went with Canadian actor William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, and in spite of NBC’s reluctance, Leonard Nimoy got a bump up in rank as the now First Officer/Science Officer. In a blow to the glass ceiling, Majel Barrett went from being the First Officer to the role of Nurse Chapel.  That new pilot became the Man Trap, which involved a shape shifting salt monster, which NBC was happy with. The footage from the original pilot got melded in to the two part episode, The Menagerie. In both cases, the episode centered around the telepathic Talosians.

Fast forward to the present and CBS All Access Star Trek Discovery. This season, they have brought back Spock (Ethan Peck), Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and now they have re-introduced the Talosians. Like many of the former Star Trek characters, the creative team on Discovery has made some changes to their appearance while maintaining the general essence of the characters.
