Not only will he be providing content for Apple TV+, but he’s developing a project for Quibi. Quibi stands for Quick Bites and is a planned platform that is dedicated to form-form videos, which is created by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and former HP CEO Meg Whitman.
After Dark
The upcoming series is called After Dark and will span from ten to twelve episodes. The interesting thing about this project is that Spielberg is designing it where it will only be viewable after dark. Get it? So far, the famed director has already written five or six episodes.
Quibi’s engineering team discovered a way to use the internal clock on a subscriber’s phone to be able to tell when the sun is about to set. A clock will then appear in the app that will count down until the sun disappears and the episodes will be available to watch. The series will then be unavailable until the next night.
Katzenberg told Variety:
“Steven Spielberg came in and said, ‘I have a super scary story I want to do.’ He’s writing it himself. He hasn’t [written anything in a while], so getting him to write something is fantastic.”
About Quibi
As far as Quibi, you should know it will launch within the next 12 months. Both Katzenberg and Whitman have raised over $1 billion in funding and the idea is to appeal to those who want content on the go. These short-form episodes are for quick viewing for those who don’t feel like sitting down for a long-drawn-out episode or movie. We do live in a digital age where we can’t focus on something for too long, so a Youtube style streaming app does make sense to the average viewer.
Katzenberg explained [about Quibi]:
“What Quibi is doing, it’s not really short-form. We’re putting those sciences together. Chapters or act breaks that are 7 to 10 minutes long. They are specifically shot to be watched on the go. If you’re 25-35 years old, you get up and you’re on [a smartphone] for over five hours.”
Quibi is expected to launch April 6, 2020, and will cost $4.99 a month with ads included and $7.99 a month + ad-free.
