Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree.
For in-depth thoughts on Strange Darling, please see my colleague Cameron Ritterโs review from its original festival release here.
Video Quality
Strange Darling comes to Blu-Ray with a terrific AVC-encoded 1080p transfer that brings this movie to life favorably. This feature is forthright with the fact that it was shot entirely on 35mm film by none other than actor-turned-cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi. The transfer retains the filmic qualities with a significant level of detail and texture in the environment and production design. The cinematography captures sumptuous colors within the environments such as the shades of green within the land that truly impress. The deep saturation throughout allows for complex hues that bring more out of the picture. Skin tones are natural throughout with some strong details present in certain shots. Magenta Light Studios has done a standout job with this release.
Audio Quality
The film comes with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that delivers a formidable listening experience. Dialogue comes through clearly without being overshadowed by any of the other sounds. Activity in the low end digs deep during the thrilling moments. The music maintains an ideal fidelity that suits the film well. Environmental effects are important within the film, and this track distinguishes each sound with deft precision. This track delivers a fully realized world filled with unique sonic details. Directionality is accurate so sounds are naturally rendered when coming from their respective points. Magenta Light Studios has delivered a first-rate track that serves the film well. Optional English SDH and French subtitles are provided.

Final Thoughts
Strange Darling is one of the more exciting discoveries of the year as you take a genre you believe you have a handle on and upend it in thrilling ways. The nonlinear structure elevates things quite effectively in a way that never feels like a gimmick, and the developments that play out are the kind that live beyond the excitement of a first-time viewing. The performances are very strong with Kyle Gallner exemplifying why he is so good in genre films and Willa Fitzgerald far outpacing anything she has delivered in the past. Together with the strong choices behind the camera, we have something pretty special at hand. Magenta Light Studios has released a Blu-Ray with a fetching A/V presentation but not much in the way of special features. Recommended
Strange Darling is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital.

Dillon is most comfortable sitting around in a theatre all day watching both big budget and independent movies.
