Supernatural is a show that has never been afraid to pay homage to media that has inspired it throughout the seasons. From an episode focusing around old black and white horror movies such as Dracula, a Scooby Doo centered episode, or meta-episodes where the actors play both themselves and their characters. Season fourteen is almost here and apparently, the fourth episode will pay its respects to classic slasher movies.
“Sam and Dean and our whole crew get involved in our homage to ’80s slasher movies. We’ve got some really cool gory stuff planned for that.” – showrunner Andrew Dabb teased.
Writing an episode inspired by 80s slasher films is definitely a creative way to fill in the space, considering season thirteen ended with Dean finally saying yes to the archangel Michael. Fans will remember that Michael attempted to use Dean as a vessel in season five, but this never came to be. In fact, Jensen Ackles has never played any other variation of himself other than Dean Winchester. Meanwhile, Jared Padalecki has not only played Sam, but Meg, Soulless Sam, Gadreel, Lucifer, and others.
“It’s challenging to write episodes without Dean Winchester in them, because he is such a fundamental part of the show.” Dabb explained in a previous interview. “But it’s also exciting [for] Jensen and us [to have] the opportunity to play around with this new character. It gives some other characters a bit of breathing room in terms of Castiel and Jack, and Mary and Bobby.”
Supernatural returns October 11th.
