It’s hard to think of Loki and imagine him as looking any different than he does now. Tom Hiddleston has gone through a bit of a transformation throughout the five MCU films he’s been in, from his hair going from mildly short to shoulder length and his costume varying slightly. Even his horn helmet has changed from Thor 1, Avengers 1, and Thor: Ragnarok. Still, there is a familiarity of Loki that we’ve become accustomed to, but there was a big chance that we could have gotten a very different looking God of Mischief.
Concept artist Charlie Wen posted an early draft of what Loki could have looked like in Thor 1. There was a moment where the film was going to go in a more sci-fi direction, so that was the concept that Wen drew up. If you look at the picture below, you can see that Wen was going for a more futuristic, technologically advanced Asgard where a sorcerer such as Loki could plausibly wear something like this. It is very strange now to see him in all armor with some garb draped over him with what looks like a floating cape of some sort? We have Dr. Strange’s cape that has a mind of its own, so that isn’t an odd concept, but I’m so glad they decided to not go with this!
“Wacky Loki! My first sketch of him as someone a bit off for the first #thor There were other options but this is the looniest one so I wanted to share. As I think of his backstory and focused on the manipulative bent than his relationship with his bro Thor which develops later, I put more character depth in his final version. At this time I also wanted to play with the idea that Asgard had magic based on science beyond human tech understanding. I’ll post the final Thor I Lokis next!” – Charlie Wen.
Loki has certainly gone through a lot since we first met him in 2011 in Thor 1. From his outward appearance to his character development, there will never be anyone quite like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. It was tragic the end that he met in the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, but I am excited to see the time-jump to the past scenes in Avengers 4 where it seems we’re going to be seeing Loki in the events of the first Avengers.
What do you think about Loki’s possible look? And what was your favorite throughout the years?
