Two men wearing minimal clothing ride horses through a crowded village street during a festival, with colorful flags and onlookers lining the scene.

“No stranger from Africa can turn the course of our destiny.” But never underestimate a stranger named Tarzan (Jock Mahoney). Over miles and obstacles, he will lead a young heir to Thailand’s spiritual throne to his ordination and undo warlord Khan’s (Woody Strode) plot to secure the title for his son. First however, the Ape-Man must prove to the heir that he is Tarzan by passing tests of skill, strength and wisdom. Ahead lies a still greater challenge: Tarzan vs. Khan in a bungee-jumping, sword-clanging, flame-dancing death duel! This second and last of Mahoney’s Tarzans (filmed to colorful effect in Thailand) was not without real-life challenges: Illness caused Mahoney to lose 40 pounds from his taut, athletic frame.

    Video Quality

Warner Archive presents Tarzan’s Three Challenges with a robust 1080p master transfer sourced from a new 2K scan of the Interpositive when this disc was released in 2019. Warner Archive maintains the level of care you expect from their output with another strong release. This transfer avoids any unwanted digital anomalies such as compression artifacts, banding, or any other such shortcomings. Black levels are in fine shape with firm stability throughout, and highlights are just as dialed in with no signs of blooming. The film features striking colors within the environments that beam off the screen. The level of detail and clarity is commendable with a necessary amount of natural film grain intact. The transfer is ostensibly free of dirt and damage, giving this a fetching appearance. Most should be more than happy with the appearance.

    Audio Quality

Warner Archive has provided a solid DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio presentation that has been restored with the proper affection. The stirring Joseph Horovitz score complements the film respectably as it comes through with top fidelity. Dialogue comes through clearly even during more bustling moments. The track pairs vocals with environmental sounds without sacrificing clarity. There are no moments when the track ever becomes weak or unstable. Warner Archive has provided a nice audio presentation that does not showcase any overwhelming instances of age-related damage. Optional English (SDH) subtitles are provided.

    Final Thoughts

Tarzan’s Three Challenges finds Jock Mahoney concluding his very brief stint as the legendary character with an entertaining yet somewhat unusual tale. Some may find the initial absence of our hero in the story to be a detriment, yet things kick into gear once all of the characters click into place. Compared to his previous stint, this outing is much more adult with some shocking violence at play. The finale has seriously disturbing consequences if you think about it. It is not the best of Tarzan, yet it does show that Mahoney was growing into the character. Warner Archive has released a Blu-Ray featuring a rich A/V presentation but almost nothing in the way of special features. Recommended

Tarzan’s Three Challenges can be purchased directly through MovieZyng or various other online retailers.
