A man seated in an office, raising his fist, with a clock and maps on the wall behind him.

Terrestrial Verses, co-directed by the visionary duo Alireza Khatami and Ali Asgari, finds its potency in a profound simplicity. Through nine self-contained vignettes, the film offers a glimpse into the lives of everyday Iranians in Tehran, framed by a static camera and conversations with an unseen interlocutor. These vignettes, while diverse in tone, converge on a central theme: the intricate dance between personal lives and the omnipresent structures of power. With a deft touch, Khatami and Asgari illuminate the absurdities and complexities of navigating life within the confines of institutionalized authority. The film stands as a poignant exploration of the human condition, offering a window into the intimate struggles and resilience of its characters against the backdrop of contemporary Iran.

Asgari and Khatami’s film captivates by showcasing how the pressures and constraints depicted in each vignette begin to echo one another, perhaps intentionally. The film’s opening aerial view of Tehran’s skyscraper-filled landscape sets a haunting tone, foreshadowing the uniformity that unfolds within its narrative structure. This deliberate mirroring of experiences adds a layer of intrigue, inviting viewers to ponder the interconnectedness of these seemingly disparate tales.

In Terrestrial Verses, captivating moments emerge like buried treasures, revealing the delicate tensions often overlooked in the humdrum of daily existence. It’s akin to the unexpected jolt of hitting your ‘funny bone’ against a hard surface—a sharp, lingering sensation that catches you off guard.

Imagine a young father ensnared in bureaucratic red tape, courageously opting to name his son ‘David’ instead of the culturally expected ‘Davood,’ igniting a clash of traditions and convictions. What seems like a simple choice evolves into a clash of worlds, a symphony of ideologies. As the story unfolds, similar scenes resonate, crafting a discordant harmony that mirrors the film’s lyrical core. Here, two young women face accusations—one for a chance encounter with a man, the other for driving without a veil. Witness the accusers stumble through their allegations like inept actors on an unstable stage, yet beneath this veneer of comedy lies a nuanced shift in power dynamics, revealing the intricate choreography of societal influences at play.

Along the journey, the camera assumes a silent role, a voyeur capturing the intricate dance of bureaucratic absurdity. Each scene unfolds like a high-stakes verbal duel, the lens focused intently on the protagonists’ faces as they navigate the bewildering maze of authority. Shot with precision and depth, the characters find themselves adrift in a barren landscape of bureaucratic scrutiny, their every move scrutinized beneath the unblinking eye of the camera. But beyond the veil of comedy lies a somber truth. As the film peels away the layers of societal norms, it exposes the raw reality of bodily inspection. From a MeToo-infused job interview that lays bare power dynamics, to the humiliating physical examinations endured by two hapless job seekers—one revealing his Farsi-scripted tattoos, the other subjected to scrutiny of his Islamic rituals—the film unveils the fragility of personal autonomy in an Orwellian world.

Through a mosaic of narratives, Khatami and Asgari weave together a rich fabric of everyday struggles against the backdrop of institutional apathy. From the absurdity of lost pet reports to the humiliation of botched job interviews, each story resonates with the universal experience of being consumed by the cogs of society. Elegant yet unyielding, the film serves as a poignant testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of systemic oppression. Terrestrial Verses is a mirror to life’s ebbs and flows, a testament to our resilience in the face of adversity. With its sincere gaze and artistic finesse, it etches itself into your soul, leaving an enduring imprint on your heart.

Terrestrial Verses will debut in select theaters on April 26, 2024, courtesy of KimStim.
