The Academy to Add a New Category

There is no surprise that comic book movies are robbed at the major award shows. How many times have we watched a film that had Oscar worthy emotional lines delivered and an epic storyline that should have been nominated, but was not because for some reason the Academy doesn’t like recognizing superhero based films. Off the top of my head, Heath Ledger winning an Oscar for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight is a rarity.

Now, it seems like the door could be open for more films in the comic book realm to get the chance they deserve. According to EW, the Academy will be adding the category of Most Popular Film. This will be implemented in 2020. The change comes from films winning major categories while not earning that much money in the box office, but say a movie like Black Panther earning over $700 domestically was not nominated.

While the category probably won’t be exclusively just comic book based films, it’ll still give our favorites more of an opportunity to take home a golden man statue. Seriously, in an era of superhero films and actors putting all of their acting chops on the line, this will open the door for well-deserved recognition.
