Four people sit around a dinner table, engaged in conversation, with food and drinks in front of them in a dimly lit kitchen.

Long (Hiệp Trần Nghĩa), a Vietnamese driver in Southern California answers a late-night call for a ride. Already in his pajamas, he reluctantly accepts, picking up a man, Tây (Dustin Nguyen), and his two companions. But the men, recently escaped convicts from an Orange County jail, take Long hostage at gunpoint, thrusting him into their getaway plan. When complications arise, the fugitives and their hostage hole up at a motel, and a tense waiting game unfolds.

Sing J. Lee’s striking visuals and mood driven aesthetic set the tone for unnerving intensity, punctuated by moments of humor and warmth. Inspired by a true story, this is not just a crime film, but a stirring portrait of this lonely, old man and his relationship with Tây.

For in-depth thoughts on The Accidental Getaway Driver, please see my colleague Andrew Fukui’s review from its festival debut here.

    Video Quality

The Accidental Getaway Driver comes to Blu-Ray in a 1080p presentation that looks excellent at home. The film exhibits a more reserved world with only intermittent bold colors in the lighting choices, clothing, and landscapes. The transfer handles every unique environment along this journey with the necessary amount of care. The transfer unveils texture within the fabrics and background elements that adds significant depth to the picture. Skin tones are impeccably detailed and natural across the ensemble. Highlights are handled favorably with no signs of blooming, and the blacks are deep and rarely falter with any crush or compression artifacts. A slight amount of banding can be spotted in a handful of moments. Utopia has done a commendable job with this release.

    Audio Quality

The Blu-Ray disc comes with a faithful and impressive DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that translates this story with ease. Dialogue comes through clearly without ever being overshadowed by competing sounds. Environmental flourishes expand the soundscape to make the world feel more authentic and human. The score establishes a tone that permeates the room with a confident presence. The soundtrack adds some valuable texture to the low end at points. Sounds are positioned correctly in the mix so nothing emerges from unnatural points. This is a sterling release all around. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided.

    Special Features

    • Q&A with Director Sing J. Lee, Moderated by Rosalind Chao: A nearly 37-minute Q&A from March 2025 in which actress Rosalind Chao speaks to filmmaker Sing J. Lee about the creation of the film, the development of the language for each character, the challenges faced during the production, the background of the performers, how his background factored into the experience of making the film, and more.

    Final Thoughts

The Accidental Getaway Driver is a bit overlong, but the emotional core of the movie hits home for the most part with touching, reserved performances and a heartfelt conclusion. Even when it stretches credulity, this feature debut from Sing J. Lee captures your attention and holds it through all the thrilling developments and moments of connection within the narrative. Utopia has released a Blu-Ray featuring a grand A/V presentation and a couple of welcome special features. This is well worth seeking out to discover a burgeoning talent. Recommended

The Accidental Getaway Driver is currently available to purchase on Standard Edition Blu-Ray or with a Limited Edition Slipcover exclusively through Vinegar Syndrome/OCN Distribution.
