‘The Addams Family 2’ Review – Just in Time for a Spooktacular Halloween

Have you ever felt out of place or different from others? Maybe just like you don’t belong? I think we all have; for me that hits close to home.

Growing up I use to be teased that I was the milk man’s daughter. Born with red hair that turned cornstalk blonde and green eyes; this was different from my family – all who had brown hair and eyes. Being different is a big thing in our family, my oldest daughter (34) and grandson (9) both have Autism. The biggest thing I’m grateful for is if someone makes fun of them or looks at them weirdly, they don’t so therefore they don’t care. But I do! In the Addams Family 2, Wednesday is feeling out of place/ different from her family – only to find out she really isn’t.

Synopsis

Morticia and Gomez are distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Before the family leaves, Gomez and Morticia are approached by a lawyer named Mr. Mustela with the claim that Wednesday was switched at birth and may not be an Addams, but not only do they ignore him they try to outrun him. On the road, Mustela and his henchman Pongo pursue the Addams family. Wednesday overhears the discussion and begins to question who she really is…..

Long ago, just before I was born; The Addams Family ran on ABC; for sadly only two years. Ever since it has had a cult following. The Addams Family has had other movies, a remake, a cartoon, and even a musical, a musical cartoon at that also. Going in I wasn’t sure what to expect, all I knew it was a family vacation and that they had the coolest camper. Honestly, I was quite surprised it was very enjoyable. I don’t know if my grandson got some of the dark humor, but he was laughing in all the right places.

One of the things that is loved about this family is that the family is creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky. At the same time, they are also, in their own way, very loving and loveable. Gomez gives Wednesday so much affection on only too much to the girl’s annoyance. Pugsley takes dating advice from Uncle Fester, yet that worked well. Lurch, the butler, is as loyal as they come. The storyline of this film works well and shows us that The Addams family members risk a lot for each other, including their very lives.

The script is not only witty, it has an all-star voice cast and a whimsical take on the franchise. The first Addams Family brought in $203 million at the box office brought about a quick turnaround for the sequel. The film features the voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Javon Walton, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, and Bill Hader.

Isaac, Theron, Kroll, and Moretz in particular are so great in their roles, it would be cool to see them reprise their roles in a live-action version. This is the one-time a live-action would be acceptable. I can tell you who will get the most attention for his part in the movie, even though he has the least lines – Snoop Dogg’s as cousin It. Perfect casting that continues to work for the franchise. Cousin It’s ballroom performance was off the chain!

Overall the story is cohesive and focused and kept the film in one lane and didn’t get bogged down on goofy subplots or bad jokes. The Addams Family 2 still has all the charm of the first film. Just remember when watching with kids that it has a dark sense of humor, homicidal/torturous attacks on Pugsley, and other death-related things. It’s a ‘kids, don’t try this at home’ manner,’ – more than likely will make for some weird conversations later.

The film was very funny. and again I LOVE the family camper. The music was good and the scenery/backgrounds were absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a fun Halloween movie I highly recommend it. The kids will be delighted and you will be snapping your finger too with its continued kooky sense of fun.
