[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”13445″ img_size=”768×433″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]HBO’s limited series Perry Mason has cast its official lead, Matthew Rhys from The Americans. Rhys will be playing the classic character himself, which will explore the unorthodox investigator’s origin story. Bringing on Rhys makes it one step closer until the series can begin production, with a director and showrunner needed. Perry Mason’s reboot will be written and executive produced by Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald.

The series will take place in Los Angeles in 1932, where the city is booming despite the rest of the country suffers from the Great Depression. This limited series will be based on the characters Erle Stanley Gardner created and will be a real detective, film noir. When we first meet Perry Mason he will be living paycheck to paycheck and is haunted by his time in France during the war as well as the broken remnants of his failed marriage.

Originally, Robert Downey Jr. was expected to play the main character in 2016 when Nic Pizzolatto was writing the series. Pizzolatto then turned his attention to True detective’s third season and due to his big-screen commitments, Downey Jr. was out. Still, Perry Mason is produced by Team Downey, which is an entertainment company built by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, so in a way, the actor is somewhat still involved, just not playing the title character.
