‘The Boondooks’ Reboot finds home on HBO Max

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”29820″ img_size=”700×350″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Just months after this summer’s revival announcement, it has now been confirmed that The Boondocks reboot has found a home on HBO Max. The fan-favorite show, with a cult following, left a bad taste in fans’ mouth with its less than spectacular last season in 2014. However, many don’t count the season as creator and writer Aaron McGruder played no part of that fourth season. According to THR, two seasons have been ordered equaling 24 episodes in total; set to premiere in the fall of 2020. Furthermore, all previous episodes will be available in the spring when the streaming service launches. The streaming wars are going to heat up next year with Disney+ launching this November and HBO Max launching in the Spring of 2020. We’ll be paying for so many services that it’s going to be cable all over again. I’ll save that rant for later.

The first three seasons of The Boondocks provided palatable social commentary that turned into real-life conversations. Conversations that were taking place in small settings but then started to take place online right as social media began to take off. Consequently, the series became a place to hear brutal truths and opinions along with predictions that ended up coming true. Go peep the Gangstalicious storyline and the R.Kelly trial episode. It’ll be interesting to see what route McGruder takes as it’s been almost a decade since he was the showrunner. In that time, meme culture has taken off, we have a new polarizing President, 6ix9ine happened, and opioids caused the new crack epidemic. The animated series was provocative and genius before and fans expect more of the same with the long-awaited reboot.

McGruder will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Norm Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the show in partnership with Sony Pictures TV.
