A child and an adult in a superhero costume sit together on a couch with milkshakes in front of them. The adult looks at the child, and they are in a room with a cityscape view in the background.

The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander’s muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son, and his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

For in-depth thoughts on The Boys: Season 4, please see my colleague Tia Fabi’s review from its original streaming release here.

    Video Quality

The Boys: Season 4 arrives on Blu-Ray with a terrific AVC encoded 1080p transfer in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The series continues to be treated well on physical media as the presentation captures the nuances of the crisp and fetching cinematography. The color palette leans a bit on the cooler side, but there are plenty of dazzling colors radiating off the screen throughout. Highlights avoid blooming when there are particularly bright light sources. Black levels are deep and reveal an excellent amount of detail in shadows. Skin tones appear very natural and nuanced across the entire ensemble.

This show has a unique style that brings out the carefully crafted production design. The level of detail this presentation extracts is a joy to witness, as all of the subtle facets in the production design and costumes are front and center. The special effects deployed throughout are ambitious and deftly rendered here. There are no serious instances of aliasing or compression artifacts detectable in this transfer. The Blu-Ray is excellent as it brings a skillfully crafted series to life in a can’t-miss transfer. This series continues to earn high marks on physical media.

    Audio Quality

This Blu-Ray comes with a sterling DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that creates a three-dimensional experience. Action sequences and more bustling moments are given the proper power you need in the mix with a mighty showing in the low end. Ambient sounds are delicately placed in the rear channels. The spatial awareness of the track does not come up short, and the surround channels are complex when it comes to the panning of certain scenes. Dialogue emerges clearly without being overwhelmed by the music or any sound effects. The series music from Christopher Lennertz establishes the vibe of the story, and it creates a wonderfully enveloping sound that draws you further into the show. The audio presentation delivers on all fronts. Optional English, English SDH, and French subtitles are provided.

    Special Features

    • Gag Reels: Plenty of flubbed and forgotten lines, joking around, malfunctioning props, and more. This is always one of the best features.
      • Season 4 Gag Reel (2:46)
      • Bonus Gag Reel #1 (1:18)
      • Bonus Gag Reel #2 (1:27)
      • Bonus Gag Reel #3 (1:31)
    • Deleted & Extended Scenes: There are 14 unused scenes totaling nearly 13 minutes provided here. Most of these moments are fairly brief and were likely cut for pacing reasons, but what is here, fans will definitely want to check out.

    Final Thoughts

The Boys continues to be one of the most boundary-pushing shows in the superhero space, but as time goes on, even it has started to show signs of fatigue. The show has amassed an amazing ensemble full of fan favorite characters, but we are getting to a point where there seems to be a certain degree of wheel-spinning. This penultimate season is just as unhinged as ever, yet the consistency is not present to make the whole season command your attention. We still like the season more so than we did not, but it feels like a good idea that the show is coming to an end soon. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released a Blu-Ray featuring a top-notch A/V presentation and a few special features to sweeten the deal. If you are a fan, the show continues to be treated well on physical media. Recommended

The Boys: Season 4 is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD.
