‘THE DEEP HOUSE’ Review – ‘You’ll be gasping for air in this Haunted House’

Synopsis: “A young and modern couple who go to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on social media undergoes a serious change of plans when the couple enters the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of a lake and their presence awakens a dark spirit that haunts the house.”

Jaws just got some company for “scariest thing to encounter underwater”. Not only is there always something ominous lurking below your feet when you’re in a body of water, but now add ghosts to that list of fears when something swims past you. You heard me, ghosts, underwater. Honestly at this point just don’t go in the water.

The Deep House is a new, slightly found footage, horror film from Blumhouse, which is also streaming on Epix Now (conveniently right now). The plot is pretty simple. A couple, Ben and Tina (played by James Jagger and Camille Rowe), trying to boost their followers on YouTube are on a mission to find abandoned places to film. They hear of a place that was artificially submerged to help halt floods in that area only to find a bunch of tourists are swimming there when they arrive. This is not going to boast well for getting the footage they want. Fate has it though and they run into a local who knows the location of a house that’s fully intact, underwater as well, only a few minutes out from the tourist trap.

The striving for fame boyfriend and the girlfriend who is along for the ride strap up their air tanks and dive deep deep down to discover the mansion. Followed closely by an underwater drone the film takes a “found footage” turn, filming from GoPro’s attached to their scuba suits and the drone.

The Deep House [2021]
Lurking meters below the lake is a perfectly preserved haunted house. Everything is intact, even the devilish presence that’s been waiting for a breath of fresh air. From shaky drone footage, to floating creepy dolls, the ghosts that are lurking get their way, hook, line and sinker.

The Deep House was a film I didn’t know I wanted. A fully submerged haunted house? Ghosts chasing you underwater. Come on. We’ve seen aliens and local sea life taking on horror in the depths of an ominous body of water, but never ghosts. The premise alone had me running to Epix.

Now although the plot itself is total horror mashup perfection, the execution wasn’t quite up to par. The mix between found footage itself had me questioning what was going on and even where at times. But regardless, the scariest (and by that I mean cringey) part of the film was the voice over from the main character, Ben. Since the characters are underwater their communication is merely voice over to represent them talking in their scuba suits, which is good, but not when one actors voice sounds like a professional radio DJ. Maybe it was just me, but it took me out of the gorgeous underwater floating horrors.

That’s something The Deep House has that a lot of films don’t have on their side though, everything is literally floating. The filmmaker, Alexander Bustillo and Julien Maury filmed it all actually underwater. No gimmicks. That’s what made me so excited. In camera, fully functioning scares cut to the core of me. That creepy doll floating up from a box, it made sense, it got me. The addition of the gravity of things truly is what blew me away. Hopefully this film inspires some future underwater horror (fingers crossed).

Overall Thoughts?

Regardless I’m knit picky and want to be fully submerged in my horror film. So sometimes when something funny is not supposed to be there it sort of raises my air tank. Still the film itself was fun and well done. Being chased by ghosts underwater! Come on. It’s a good Saturday night and chill film to throw on. And the ending was pretty great…but you’ll have to dive in to find out.
