The anticipation surrounding David Gordon Green’s revival of the iconic horror franchise, The Exorcist, has been met with mixed reactions after a recent test screening of the first installment, titled The Exorcist: Believer. While negative test screenings are not always indicative of the final film’s quality, it is still a cause for concern. However, with the opportunity for reshoots and edits, there is still hope for the franchise’s success.

Early reviews on platforms like Letterboxd and other social media outlets have highlighted some common complaints about the screening of The Exorcist: Believer. Many viewers expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s length, suggesting it may have overstayed its welcome. Additionally, some viewers found it lacking in scares, which is a significant concern for a horror film. However, there seems to be a consensus that the movie contains at least one exceptional jump scare that has the potential to rival the iconic moment from Exorcist III.

Negative test screenings should not be taken as the final verdict for any film. There have been instances in the past where solid films were significantly altered or even ruined due to negative audience reactions at this stage. It is crucial for everyone involved in the project to carefully consider the feedback received and make the best decisions moving forward to deliver the best possible Exorcist sequel(s).

David Gordon Green, who successfully revived the Halloween franchise, took the helm as director for The Exorcist: Believer. He co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler, while the story was crafted by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green himself. The talented cast features Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Jennifer Nettles, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, and Okwui Okpokwasili, promising an exciting and compelling performance.

The release of The Exorcist: Believer is scheduled for October 13, 2023.
