Few Hollywood careers have experienced a comeback as remarkable as that of Robert Downey Jr.. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the actor’s immense talent was often overshadowed by highly publicised battles with addiction and legal troubles. Many believed his career had reached its end. However, through determination and recovery, Downey Jr. rebuilt both his personal life and professional reputation, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars in modern cinema.

It was a remarkable turnaround, getting the help he needed through the support of the best drug rehab centre and treatment, and with the help of Mel Gibson initially, who famously paid his insurance bond to return to movies, he transformed himself into a box office phenomenon.

From superhero blockbusters to sharp comedies and dramatic roles, Robert Downey Jr. has delivered some of the most memorable performances of the last few decades. Here are five of his very best films.

    Iron Man (2008)

Iron Man is not only Robert Downey Jr.’s defining performance but also one of the most important superhero films ever made. Playing billionaire inventor Tony Stark, Downey Jr. brought charisma, humour, vulnerability, and intelligence to the role in a way that completely changed the genre.

At the time, casting him was considered a risk due to his troubled past, but the gamble paid off spectacularly. His portrayal of Stark felt authentic and layered, partly because audiences could connect the character’s personal redemption arc with Downey Jr.’s own real-life comeback.

The film launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and established Downey Jr. as one of the biggest movie stars in the world. More importantly, it remains one of the most entertaining and influential superhero films ever created.

    Chaplin (1992)

Long before his blockbuster fame, Robert Downey Jr. proved his acting brilliance in Chaplin. In the film, he portrayed legendary silent film icon Charlie Chaplin with extraordinary precision and emotional depth.

Downey Jr.’s performance captured both Chaplin’s comedic genius and his personal struggles, showcasing a level of maturity rarely seen from actors of his age at the time. His physical transformation and ability to replicate Chaplin’s mannerisms were remarkable, earning him widespread critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination.

Many critics still consider this to be one of the finest performances of his career because it demonstrated his range long before mainstream audiences fully recognised his talent.

    Zodiac (2007)

Zodiac may not have the explosive action of his Marvel films, but it remains one of Robert Downey Jr.’s strongest dramatic performances. Directed by David Fincher, the film follows journalists and investigators attempting to uncover the identity of the infamous Zodiac Killer.

Downey Jr. plays journalist Paul Avery, bringing wit, intelligence, and emotional vulnerability to the role. As the story progresses, Avery’s growing paranoia and personal decline become increasingly compelling.

The film itself is tense, intelligent, and atmospheric, and Downey Jr.’s performance adds depth to an already exceptional cast. Zodiac proved that even during his comeback years, he was capable of delivering nuanced dramatic work beyond blockbuster entertainment.

    Tropic Thunder (2008)

Robert Downey Jr. showcased his comedic brilliance in Tropic Thunder, one of the boldest comedies of the 2000s. Playing method actor Kirk Lazarus, Downey Jr. delivered an outrageous yet surprisingly clever performance that stole the film.

What made the role so impressive was his complete commitment to the satire. The character mocked the extremes of Hollywood acting culture while still remaining genuinely funny throughout. Despite the controversial nature of the role, Downey Jr. managed to balance humour with sharp self-awareness.

His performance earned another Academy Award nomination and demonstrated his ability to dominate both comedy and drama equally effectively.

    Avengers: Endgame (2019)

After more than a decade playing Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. delivered an emotional farewell in Avengers: Endgame. The film became one of the highest-grossing movies in cinema history and marked the conclusion of one of modern film’s most successful character arcs.

Downey Jr.’s performance carried genuine emotional weight because audiences had followed Stark’s journey for years. His final scenes balanced heroism, sacrifice, and humanity in a way that resonated deeply with fans around the world.

While Iron Man introduced the character, Endgame cemented Downey Jr.’s legacy as the face of an entire cinematic era.
