After the daughter of Wang Wei (Xie Miao) is kidnapped by a criminal network and he receives no help from the corrupt police, Wei sets out on a rampage to find her himself. His only ally is Navin (Joe Taslim) — a relentless journalist whose wife has mysteriously disappeared. Fueled by a furious vengeance, the unlikely duo ruthlessly fights against the kidnappers in this explosive martial arts showdown.

Video Quality

The Furious kicks serious butt with its 2160p/Dolby Vision presentation in 2.39:1 on this 4K UHD Blu-Ray disc. While the included Blu-Ray disc is also a delight, you cannot beat the uptick in detail this superior format offers. From the opening moments, you are treated to a grander sense of depth within the environments, more satisfying textures on the clothes, and greater clarity in the production design.

One of the greatest assets of this presentation is the utilization of Dolby Vision to provide exceptionally deep black levels, especially helpful since so much of the film takes place at night or in dark rooms and hallways. All environments are incredibly deep and detailed with digital noise almost entirely absent from the screen. Numerous shots of our protagonists kicking butt down dimly lit corridors show no signs of crush. Brighter scenes wow with an intense clarity and a strong handle of highlights that show no evidence of blooming.

Color highlights are another area of welcome improvement in comparison to the Blu-Ray. Colors look more natural in this presentation with the bold lighting choices really coming alive. Skin tones look very consistent (and bloody) throughout and show a great amount of facial detail. The 4K presentation provides a depth of field that simply cannot be replicated as well with the Blu-Ray. This transfer shows an immense amount of detail in even the smallest facets of each environment. This is a knockout 4K UHD presentation that will impress anyone who picks it up.

Audio Quality

This disc comes equipped with a 5-star Dolby Atmos presentation that fully immerses you in this world. There are facets of this track that will leave you fist-pumping with excitement, as nearly every action sequence is matched with sound design that translates every blow with a vengeance. Even other environmental sounds such as running water and vehicles speeding through radiate in a way that utilizes the height channels. Sounds are precisely rendered with pinpoint directionality from the more kinetic scenes to the handful of expository moments. Dialogue is presented clearly without ever being drowned out by any of the competing sonic elements.

The sound design of this film is quite powerful, and the implementation of environmental sounds is executed very effectively. The low end is activated particularly well with consistent engagement from the opening scene to the end which will have your seat rocking. The score conjures the perfect tone that amps up emotional stakes. The mix is very well done with perfect engagement of all the channels, so those with a good system should have a blast. The film is presented with its US theatrical audio track of primarily dubbed English with some exchanges in the native languages of the characters. Optional English SDH and Spanish subtitles are provided.

Final Thoughts

The Furious is one of the most deliriously enjoyable action movies we have seen in some time. Of course, you have to throw reality out the door with the sheer level of carnage doled out that would have real-world individuals in body bags after a few hefty blows. With this in mind, the film treats every action set piece like it means something. There is real consideration put into each brutal hit, coalescing into a strangely beautiful dance of unyielding violence that flows and astounds. The narrative is very simple and perhaps a bit overlong for what it needs to be, but the action is so much fun that we overlook any small nitpicks. If you want to be in action movie heaven, this should not be missed. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released a 4K UHD Blu-Ray that sports a superb A/V presentation and a fine array of special features. Highly Recommended
