Beginning Thoughts

Remember the first time we heard that a Lego movie was being released in theaters worldwide. I thought it was one of the dumbest ideas ever. Until I actually watched The Lego Movie. No one would have thought that a movie about Legos would become a successful franchise both critically and financially.

That was the first movie. How does the second one hold up? The Lego Movie: The Second Part, in my opinion, is not as good as the first movie, but do not let that fool you The Lego Movie: The Second Part is the best movie out this year! Granted, the movie year is still in its first quarter. We as movie fans will have a long and emotional year ahead of us.

Animation!

The animation team does a brilliant job selling the story, with their animations, that Chris Miller and Phil Lord writes. Not only does the team meet expectations.

They expand upon it with major worldbuilding. For example, when Emmett leaves to go save Lucy, oh and the rest of his friends he travels through different planets James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy style and on a specific planet, it felt like James Cameron Avatar.

I’ve also heard others had the Mad Max vibe for The Lego Movie: The Second Part and I would have to agree.

Music (minor spoiler)

Unlike the first one, there is more variety of music and I feel more memorable than the first Lego movie. My Favorite is Gotham City Guys, where Tiffany Haddish’s character Queen Watevra Wa’Nab and Will Arnett’s Batman are together.

Also, the end credit song Super Cool is worth staying for. I usually only stay for the end credit for Marvel Movies because of the End Credits and Worlds of Dc because they are pure art.

Story/Message

The story aspect of The Lego Movie: The Second Part for me is the weakest. The mix between the real world and the Lego world felt balanced and I loved the big twist as well, but that twist was a major problem.

The message is super relevant especially for the comic book fandom and the issue with Bill Maher talking bad about Stan Lee, which was uncalled for and immature, but we will not get into that discussion.

The Lego Movie: The Second Part talks about changing with the times and becoming an adult which is an important topic on its own. There is a scene where Lucy talks to Emmet and says, “Emmett, you’ve got to stop pretending that everything is awesome.” and another scene where Emmet meets Rex and Emmett wants Rex to teach him how to be cooler, more mature, like what all adults are supposed to be.

There has always been this debate the cartoons or anime is only for kids, but why is that? I’ve heard because only kids watch them or we use to watch them as kids.

If that is the case the playing a sport or watching a sport is for only for kids too. There was a scene were Rex references a movie and says, you will know when you are an adult (Something along those lines). I have a problem with that scene because Rex is basically saying movie are only for grownups.

 Overall Thoughts

The Lego Movie: The Second Part is a fun time at the theaters. Bring your children, bring friends because no matter the age this movie is worth the price of admission. Whether you are looking for a good laugh, great character interactions, or fantastic action sequences this is a movie for you.

If you watched this movie tell me what you think of it? Did you like/dislike? Do you agree with my thoughts on the grown-up issue? If not let me know what your thoughts on the subject matter.
