Season four’s Midge starts off with a very different Mrs. Maisel than the one we’ve seen. Sure, we’ve seen Midge down and out. We’ve seen her downtrodden and jaded by the events of her life – especially in season one. However, even during the worst of times, Midge remained upbeat and fun-loving. It was her quirky sense of wit and humor that carried her to the events of season three – where everything looked like there was no way, but up.
Get Ready for a New Midge
However, Midge is scorned by the events of season three’s finale. Season four’s opening saw Midge as focused, determined, and no longer blinded by upbeat positivity. If no one was going to pave the way for her, then well…she will have to do it herself. Despite the change in strategy, Midge and everyone else feels familiar. This is still the great show that we all know and love. It’s now the 60s – things are changing. The goal seems clearer and all of the players are on the board.
While I still think Midge needs to accept that the jokes she made at the Apollo were not hers to make, nor were they appropriate for the times, I do love this new sharp and hyperfocused Midge. It’s just nice seeing everyone back. The first episode was funny, serious, engaging, and set up for great things to come. The first episode of season four meshed well with the finale of season three.

Now that we know that the show has been renewed for a fifth and final season, it will be interesting to see how season four sets up for the last season. I hope and do believe that two seasons will be enough to give this great show the finale it deserves. I’m excited for all this show has yet to show and I look forward to see how Midge will accomplish her goals.
