Buddy Holly was a talented music star when he died in a plane crash in 1959. While Holly’s spirit lives on in his music, Holly will also be coming to the big screen. A biopic, named Clear Lake; has now cast Ruairi O’Connor as the singer-songwriter. O’Conner is best known for playing a young King Henry VIII in the Starz drama The Spanish Princess.
Producer Rick French commented:
“We looked at hundreds and hundreds of audition tapes for the Buddy Holly role and interviewed some tremendously talented actors and musicians but Ruairi’s audition really stood out. He’s a terrific young actor who exudes charisma and he’s also a very accomplished musician who our team believes can handle this very challenging role.”
Clear Lake will tell the story of Buddy Holly and other musicians in the late 1950s rocking out. As well as “changing the trajectory of civil rights in America”. Along with Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson also died in the plane crash. This has been referred to as “the day the music died” – which, you’ve probably heard the song American Pie Pt. 1 by Don McLean.
Clear Lake is set to start principal photography in Spring of 2021.
