The Spiny Blue Wheel Starts Spinning on ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

Revving up for the new year, pre-production is in progress for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’, the sequel to 2020’s adventure-comedy video game adaptation starring everyone’s favorite speedster in sneakers. The film, which will enter production in March 2021, will be helmed by returning director Jeff Fowler and returning screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

The first film, released only ten months (and a thousand years, by 2020 standards) ago, featured Ben Schwartz as the titular extraterrestrial blue speed demon, and James Marsden as Tom, the film’s everyday man in extraordinary circumstances, who becomes a vital friend. Jim Carrey thrilled audiences in his return to wild comedy as the wily Dr. Robotnik, who is set to return for the sequel in villainous flair. ‘Sonic’ was a much-needed boon to the film industry before a tumble into hard times, scoring $321 million in box office revenue worldwide.

Fan favorites from the game series absent from the first are set to appear in the sequel. Tails, Sonic’s beloved helicopter-tailed sidekick, is expected to have a major role much expanded from his post-credit scene introduction in the first film. The extremely popular and objectively cool Knuckles the Echidna will also be punching his way up to the big screen.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ is slated for release on April 8, 2022.
