The West Wing Will Reunite On HBO Max For a Theatrical Version Of a Popular Episode

The West Wing is reuniting in an upcoming special for HBO Max. For the first time in 17 years, Aaron Sorkin reunites Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Dule Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, and Bradley Whitford. Thomas Schlame will also join Sorkin for A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.

The upcoming feature will include a theatrical performance of Hartsfield’s Landing. This is an episode from the third season that featured Sheen’s President Barlet playing chess with Lowe’s Sam and Schiff’s Toby. While this is happening, the Chinese are playing war games. And Whitford’s Josh is nervous about the 42 votes from a small New Hampshire town’s election. This remote town always predicts the winner os the state’s primary.

The team has reunited before, but never for an on-air television event. The purpose of this reunion is to raise awareness for and support When We All Vote. When We All Vote is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that Michelle Obama is the co-chairperson for. It was created with the intention of increasing participation during every election in America. For the special, WarnerMedia will donate money to the organization. Michelle Obama will also make a guest appearance.

The West Wing special event will shoot during multiple days at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown LA in early October.

Sorkin stated:

“Tommy and I are incredibly excited to be getting The West Wing cast back together for this staged reading and to support When We All Vote in their efforts to get all of us involved in this election.”

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, also expressed:

“With A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote, we are excited to revisit this legendary series and offer our passionate fans something that is substantial, meaningful and unforgettable, while also promoting an important message for our time. Combined with WarnerMedia’s donation to When We All Vote, this special not only entertains, but also help ensure the organization can carry forth its mission to increase voter participation in every election.”
