What’s better than two Tom Hardy’s? That is what you get in 2015’s Legend. In this period drama, Hardy plays the legendary criminals Ronnie and Reggie Kray. On top of Hardy, Legend has a lot of familiar faces. Such as Marvel’s Paul Bettany, American Gods’ Emily Browning, Peaky Blinders’ Paul Anderson, and the Kingsmen’s Taron Egerton.
Slight Spoilers
The movie is about the notorious gangster twins, but is told from Frances Shea’s (Browning) perspective. As the future wife of Reggie Kray, Frances explains who the Krays are. She explains their business and their personalities. Throughout the movie, we see the dealings of their criminal enterprises, but the movie is really about Reggie’s relationship with Frances and the dynamic between the brothers. Reggie presents himself as put together and gentlemanly, while Ronnie is a bit of a wild card. Brash, forward, and lacking social cues, Ronnie does end up being the one with “better morals” in the end. Reggie is not who he seems and unfortunately, Frances gets to witness that first hand.
Rating: 3.5/5
It’s obvious that Hardy most likely had a better time playing Ronnie than he did Reggie. Not that he didn’t play Reggie perfectly. Reggie was meant to be the well put together brother who really was the true monster, while Ronnie was simply unconventional, but wore his personality on his sleeves. There were no lies or deceit with Ronnie – he was who he was. Legend isn’t the typical gangster film, though; it has plenty of typical scenes in it. Legend is a tragic tale of a woman’s life forever changed because of the man she loved.
Legend is available on Netflix now and you should definitely watch it for Hardy’s performance as Ronnie alone.
