Transformers: Earthspark‘s first half of its second season has dropped on Paramount Plus and after the surprisingly fun and epic season one’s finale, the next installment had big shoes to fill. Ultimately, the first batch of episodes for the second season follows the same trend that season one’s first batch and focuses entirely too much on fluff.
Disclaimer
Now, this show is made for children. It’s very much written for a younger audience, as opposed to older Transformers fans. And considering the entire show centers around the concept of Earth-bound Cybertronians and human children being connected to them, that concept was never going to go away. It’s a shame, considering the show is at its best when it focuses on its legacy characters.
The important thing to know is that these aren’t the only episodes in season two. Like season one, it seems the episodes will be put out in batches. And the first season’s first batch was relatively lighthearted. So, fans who enjoy that will certainly enjoy this. There’s lighthearted fun to balance out the seriousness of season one’s finale. New Terrans are introduced and we get more Breakdown fun and, considering he’s one of the best characters, that is great to see.
However, there is not nearly enough screentime for the Decepticons, nor did it feel like they acknowledged the events of the finale enough. Fans and the characters in the show know Megatron was the leader of the Decepticon, but he’s been by Optimus’s side for some time in the show. It’s a concept that was shown in the IDW comic book run of Transformers; it can be done well. But, season one introduced Starscream and his PTSD from Megatron’s treatment. It felt like Megatron’s past sins should have been touched upon more, especially since they framed him in such a dangerous manner in season one’s finale albeit he was under the influence of Mandroid’s devices.

The Starscream Problem
Starscream fans also won’t be happy, as it seems he’s back to his evil self. Season one’s finale stretch of episodes had Decepticons and Autobots working together. It showed Decepticons not as a group of evil bots, but just as a different faction that simply felt scorned that the leader they sacrificed everything for left them. It felt like after the two factions literally saved all Cybertronians maybe the show could have found a way to have the two living cohesively. But, no. We’re back to the status quo of the Cons being bad and Starscream does some pretty unspeakable things at the end of this batch of episodes.
We don’t know when the next batches of episodes will be released, so maybe the whole picture will make more sense, but for now, it doesn’t excite anything in me.
