Actor Peter Cullen has voiced Optimus Prime since 1984. While Cullen has played many different characters in his life, he’s most well-known for portraying the gentle leader of the Autobot faction in the Transformers franchise. No matter what age you are, your favorite Transformers cartoon was likely led by Cullen as Optimus Prime. Beloved by fans, he will now be recognized by the The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
NATAS will honor Cullen at their 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards on December 17th. Adam Sharp, who is the President and CEO of NATAS; had this to say of the award:
“We are thrilled to recognize Peter Cullen, who has voiced so many iconic characters over a lifetime of true achievement. His remarkable career in many genres of television and film make him an exemplary honoree.”

“Are you sure they have the right Cullen? I spell it C-u-l-l-E-n. Seriously though, I am humbled to be recognized by the Academy with this great honor.”

As a Transformers fan, this is a really endearing moment of entertainment history for Cullen to receive this award. While you may say that he’s simply voicing a robot, fans of the franchise will argue that it’s Cullen’s gentle cadence as Optimus Prime that has taught them many lessons on how to be a good person. Cullen has revealed the inspiration behind his Optimus Prime voice and it’s a nice message for anyone:
“Peter, if you’re gonna be a hero, be a real hero. Don’t be one of those Hollywood pretenders, don’t go yelling and screaming and pretending you’re a tough guy. Be strong enough to be gentle.”
