    TROLLS BAND TOGETHER

Get ready for an all-star family reunion like no other in the latest chapter of DreamWorks Animation’s blockbuster musical franchise, now with a Sing-Along edition! As Poppy (Anna Kendrick) grows closer to her now boyfriend Branch (Justin Timberlake), she discovers his secret past as a member of her favorite boyband, BroZone, with his four estranged brothers. When Branch’s bro Floyd is kidnapped for his musical talents by a pair of nefarious popstars, Branch and Poppy embark on an action-packed journey to reunite the other brothers and rescue Floyd. Along the way Poppy uncovers a family secret of her own, a long-lost sister named Viva (Camila Cabello). TROLLS BAND TOGETHER features the franchise’s signature psychedelic joy-bomb of new and classic pop hits that will have you singing and dancing along over and over again!

For in-depth thoughts on Trolls Band Together, please see my colleague Dom Fisher’s review from its original theatrical release here.

    Video Quality

Trolls Band Together comes to 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a resplendent 2160p HDR/Dolby Vision transfer that dazzles at every turn. The technology in animation keeps progressing to unbelievable heights which makes it the perfect marriage with this format. The character designs render with perfect fluid motions throughout no matter the whimsical environment. The textures of the different character designs and environments are extremely impressive and give the film a real sense of depth.

The level of detail the animation team puts into each new location gives you so much to soak in and geek out over. With this group of characters, it is helpful to have all of the subtle facets that allow them to stand out more prominently. One of the most incredible upgrades with this format comes in the form of spectacular colors. With every single hue that appears on the screen, you truly appreciate what HDR can bring to the viewing experience. Highlights are kept at the perfect level to avoid blooming. Black levels are very deep and strong with no trace of compression artifacts or digital anomalies of the sort. Universal has kept up the high level of quality that you expect from them.

    Audio Quality

This 4K UHD Blu-Ray provides a Dolby Atmos track that gives this musical film a tremendously diverse soundscape. The film correlates much of its identity with the musical offerings, and this track renders every tune with flawless fidelity. Environmental sound effects are rendered with distinct clarity within the mix so that directionality is never an issue. Dialogue is crisp and clear in the center channel without ever getting drowned out by the music or sound effects. The low-end activity from the subwoofer makes an impressive showing when it comes to strength and nuance as it provides excellent texture.

It is difficult to argue with the quality of the audio track provided here. The utilization of the height channels is a key element in allowing this world to feel completely immersive and three-dimensional. A great deal of activity finds a home in the front channels, but activity extends to the surrounds and rears to allow for a more immersive experience. The audio is just as worthy of praise as the video side of things. There are optional English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles provided.

    Special Features

    • Sing-Along Version
    • Audio Commentary: Producer Gina Shay, Co-Director Tim Heitz, Head of Story Colin Jack, Production Designer Ruben Perez Reynoso and Visual Effects Supervisor Marc J. Scott provide a pretty decent commentary track in which they discuss the production process, coming up with certain designs, the challenges of certain sequences, the story development, the special effects work, the performances, and much more.
    • It Takes Three: A four-minute original short is provided with Poppy, Viva, and Tiny Diamond that blends 3-D and 2-D information for an amusing time.
    • Deleted Scenes with Intro by Head of Story Colin Jack: There are three scenes totaling five minutes of unused material provided in unfinished form with insights from the Head of Story. These moments are amusing but were understandably cut for pacing reasons.
    • Fun In The Recording Booth: A four-minute look at the vocal performances in this outing with some flubs and funny moments.
    • Hi, Hi, Hi: A nearly four-minute look at the *NSYNC reunion is provided here with insights from the band.
    • Building The Band: A look at the new and returning characters for this third outing with some fun interviews with the cast and creative team.
      • #Broppy (3:16)
      • Brozone (3:31)
      • Viva (1:19)
      • Velvet and Veneer (1:36)
      • Bridget and King Gristle (1:26)
      • Tiny Diamond (1:28)
    • Together Again: Another nearly three-minute piece about the *NSYNC reunion and how the creatives created their troll counterparts.
    • Animating Trolls: A four-and-a-half-minute look at how these characters and worlds were brought to life through computer animation.
    • How To Draw: A series of instructional videos are provided for how to properly bring to life characters from the film.
      • Baby Branch (3:20)
      • John Dory (3:18)
      • Spruce (3:41)
      • Clay (3:22)
      • Floyd (3:36)
      • Viva (5:50)
    • How To – Hug Time Bracelets: A two-and-a-half-minute video that instructs you on how to make your own bracelets.

    Final Thoughts

Trolls Band Together is a fun family sequel that does not reinvent the wheel but capably offers up what the audience wants from the series. These films always boil down to the importance of family and keeping a tune alive in your heart, and it is difficult to argue with that message. The vocal performances are all capably executed by a favorable ensemble. The film is pretty funny for a family endeavor, but it is not likely to win over any fans who have not already been on board. Universal has provided this one with a 4K UHD Blu-Ray with a first-rate A/V presentation and a solid array of special features. Recommended

Trolls Band Together is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital.

Note: Images presented in this review are not reflective of the image quality of the 4K UHD Blu-Ray.
