The chilling tale revolves around Jordan, portrayed by the talented Shelley Regner, who finds herself plunged into a waking nightmare after the tragic loss of her friend. Struggling to cope with the devastating aftermath, Jordan begins to experience unsettling manic episodes that shroud her reality in a haze of confusion and fear. Seeking solace in sleep, her mother turns to a family doctor who prescribes the sleep aid Ambien to combat her sleepwalking tendencies. However, as time progresses, the lines between dreams and reality blur, and Jordan finds herself grappling with the unsettling inability to distinguish between the two.
The cast is joined by Yan Birch, known for his role in “The People Under The Stairs,” and Stephen Wu from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” adding depth and intensity to an already star-studded lineup. With Every Heart from “Return to Me” rounding out the ensemble, “Waking Nightmare” promises a captivating and gripping narrative that will leave viewers spellbound.
At its core, “Waking Nightmare” masterfully blends elements of horror, comedy, and drama, crafting a unique experience that draws inspiration from both classic horror films and contemporary thrillers. Director Stephen Craig aimed to push the boundaries of the genre, seeking to create a cinematic journey that embodies the toxic uncertainty reminiscent of works like Miike’s “Audition.” The film’s central theme revolves around an unwitting killer who emerges from the façade of an average girl desperately attempting to reclaim a semblance of normalcy in a world that teeters on the edge of madness.
Collaborating with Craig on this ambitious project is Brian Farmer, who shares a deep fascination with bending the forms of reality. Farmer’s creative vision shines through in “Waking Nightmare,” as he works alongside Craig to craft a visually captivating world that traverses the realms of sanity and insanity. The characters navigate this shifting landscape, grappling with the unpredictable nature of sleepwalking that evokes a sense of dread and uncertainty.
As Brian Farmer explains, “People are affected by sleepwalking. The unknown of where you’ll wake up is truly a Waking Nightmare.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the film, where the boundaries of reality are blurred, and the very fabric of the characters’ existence is torn asunder by the enigmatic horrors of the mind.
“Waking Nightmare” is poised to take audiences on a chilling and thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche, offering a tantalizing blend of horror, suspense, and psychological intrigue. As the VOD release date approaches, fans of the genre can anticipate a cinematic experience that will leave an indelible mark on their psyche and deliver a spine-tingling tale that lingers long after the credits roll. Get ready to confront your deepest fears and embark on a journey through the unknown as “Waking Nightmare” invites you to embrace the darkness within.
