To whet people’s appetite for what they might expect, Warner Bros gave a glimpse into the first 20 minutes of the film. While not complete and with some scenes purposely edited to leave some events to their audiences imagination, it revealed a film with humor and fun which hopefully will delight the fan base.
Here is what was revealed to this point. It starts to the soundtrack of Eminem’s “Slim Shady” as Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his fellow orphans head into school. This is where we are given a better glimpse into the characters. Billy is a shy introvert who is not afraid to stand up for what is right while his friend Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Glazer) is a high spirited young man who refuses to let his limitations define him. When some bigger and older kids start to pick on Freddy, Billy intervenes although he knows he is at a disadvantage in a fight with these bullies. He does the smart thing, which is to run.
This leads him to the subway and a supernatural encounter with Djimon Hounsou who is dressed in a costume similar to the Shazam! Suit. He introduces himself as the last remaining Wizard of the seven who possessed tremendous powers among the Council of Wizards. For his courageous action in helping Freddy, he wants to bestow Billy Batson with the powers of Shazam by the utterance of a single word. SHAZAM! Billy for his part is skeptical and hesitates to say the word, much to the consternation of the Wizard. When Billy finally relents and says the magic word, he turns into the hero ( Zachary Levi) but with Billy still in control…he doesn’t know what to do. So he goes to the one source he knows for all things “cape crusader,” his friend Freddy. Once Freddy gets over the shock of the transformation, he helps Billy try to discover his abilities, sometimes with humorous effects.
Before the clip ended, Billy is given an opportunity to put his skills to the test to help a woman in distress who appeared to have her purse stolen. This served to show young Billy that he still much to learn about being a hero, including how much force to use and whether his assistance is required at all.
