Police corruption has always been at the center of HBO’s We Own This City. Focused on the Baltimore Police’s Gun Trace Task Force, the entire plot has been about the corruption that ran rampant in this force. Unfortunately, things like this continue to happen today and it feels like there is no end in sight. The show is insightful in this way – mirroring the events of real-life and making us wonder if there’s not one person in a position of power who is not corrupt?

    A Sullen Finale

For six whole episodes, we’ve seen the members of this task force operate like “1930s gangsters”.So, in a way, it is satisfying to see each and every one of them brought down and served some semblance of justice. But, the finale was not some big, shattering finale. It wasn’t all that shocking. It was bleak and somber. It really wasn’t satisfying to see these characters sentenced to prison time. It was depressing, knowing not only that these cops were responsible for the crimes they committed, but knowing that so many in law enforcement and politics operate the same way to this day.

    Rating: 7/10

Part of me was slightly disappointed that the finale wasn’t more explosive, but ‘We Own This City’ aimed to be realistic – not glamorous. It wanted to put these men on display and showcase their corruption. It wanted to make them look small and weak for using their power to abuse others and the law. And it did that – it succeeded in that. While the finale left me feeling depressed, I cannot deny how good the writing and the acting is here. Each actor did what they were supposed to do in really shaming the real life people who partook in these crimes.

I can’t entirely say that this was my favorite finale for a miniseries, but I can say that this was a great miniseries overall – one that is all too prevalent even to this day.

    7.0 Somber And Bleak Ending

A realistic ending that may or may not set will with fans of the series.
