Hollywood owes a lot of its success to books. The industry not only adapts some of the biggest films from novels but they also adapt from comics as well. While you might think all we get are superhero movies and reboots, there is a great novel sitting out there somewhere that is begging to be turned into major motion picture.

Some of the biggest movies ever made got their start in the form of a novel. The Lord of the Rings? Yep, that a was a novel before it was turned into an Oscar winning film franchise. Harry Potter, Twilight, The Green Mile and of course the Jurassic Park franchise all were successful books before being adapted into film.

Betway Casino took a look at the most successful book-to-film adaptations in motion picture history.

Lets start out with the highest grossing franchise film adaptations from books. The following stats are provided from BoxOfficeMojo and IMDB.  The highest grossing film adapted from a book is Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2. The film earned over $1.34 billion at the global box office. Harry Potter films hold 3 of the top 10 spots.  The other films in the rank include two of the Lord of The Rings films, two Hobbit films, Jurassic Park, Jungle Book and Alice in Wonderland. You can check out the official chart below.

Some of the novels adapted are not formatted into one movie. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was made into two movies to allow for the story to be told. Some novels are only partially adapted. This can frustrate some fans of the books because some of their favorite moments are changed or even cut out entirely from the film. Some movies are even adapted from books for the title alone and the film follows hardly nothing from the original source material.  You see this often with comic book films.

Betway went even further and looked into some of the highest rated film adaptations from books. Leading the charge is The Shawshank Redemption.  Stephen King’s books have found some success being adapted into films. Some of his books turned into films are Carrie, Pet Sematary, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and of course The Shawshank Redemption.

Highest Rated Film Adaptations of Books

Some other notable authors who have found success in film are Tom Clancy, JK Rowling, Michael Crichton, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Betway looked into the rankings and determined that standalone releases did not perform quite as well as films that were part of a franchise. That is to be expected as films with more than one movie tend to gain popularity with each release.

There are some great charts put together that show how film scores compare to their book rankings.

How The Harry Potter Books and Films Compare

Also a determining factor in successful film adaptations were based on how popular the book series was.

How The Highest Grossing Films Compare To Their Books

I had no clue Shrek was even a book before it became a movie. I guess you really do learn something new everyday.

Of course we just covered films here but books have been adapted into television shows as well. Needless to say that without books and comics, Hollywood might be a very lonely place. The next time you watch a movie check to see if it was a book first. You might just find you love the book more or even less than the film.
