Minecraft’s next major update is set to be released next week on June 7th. For the last year, fans have referred to it as ‘Minecraft 1.20’ – but Mojang have now given it an official name: ‘Trails and Tales’. The update is going to be centred around ‘self expression, creativity, and intrinsic motivation’ and already many of the details of the update have been shared. Below are just some of the new features to expect from ‘Trails and Tails’.
Camels and sniffers
The new update will introduce two new mobs: ‘camels’ and ‘sniffers’. Camels are a new type of mount that will be capable of carrying two players (so when exploring with a friend, you don’t have to use separate mounts). Sniffers won the community vote last year and are designed to be a new type of mob hatched from ancient eggs that have been excavated via archaeology. Sniffers will be able to sniff out suspicious sand blocks. This leads to the next big update that players can expect…
Suspicious sand
‘Trails and Tails’ will introduce archaeology to Minecraft. Players will be able to uncover a new type of sand block located around desert temples called ‘suspicious sand’. Using a brush tool, you can then excavate various treasures from these suspicious sand blocks. Such treasures include pottery shards, bones, tools and sniffer eggs. This feature is likely to bring an Indiana Jone element to Minecraft Survival servers.
Bamboo blocks
Bamboo blocks are a new type of wood block that will be available to players. Using these bamboo blocks, players will be able to build everything from stairs to trapdoors. A new type of boat called a ‘raft’ can also be built exclusively using bamboo blocks. Bamboo mosaic blocks will also feature in the game as a new decorative block.
Armour trim
Looking at some of the leaked snapshots from the update, it looks like armour will now have cool new trims. Players will likely be able to modify armour by taking it back to the smithing table. We’re not sure if this trim will have any practical advantages, but it could help to make armour look more exciting and personalised.
Bundles?
There’s been a lot of talk about introducing bundles to Minecraft, ever since Mojang revealed the idea back in 2020. While experimental data packs have since introduced bundles, it has yet to be introduced to the game as a default feature. Bundles would allow the option to store multiple items in a single inventory slot. It seems unlikely that bundles will make an appearance in the latest update, but we have our fingers crossed that they will appear in another future update.
Any other features?
While a lot of information has been revealed already as to the details of the update, there will likely be a few more surprises when the update is released next week. This will likely include new mobs and blocks. We’re also interested as to what the ‘tales’ aspect of ‘trails and tales’ could include. Is this the archaeology feature? Or could there be more?
