Fans of the Warner Bros. Monsterverse movies got some news to chew over recently when it was confirmed that the next film will be released in 2027. The title Godzilla X Kong: Supernova was revealed, but what can we expect from it?
The Story So Far
The first King Kong movie was released in 1933 to incredible success. The story of a giant gorilla that escapes in New York inspired a generation of movie-goers, with actor Morgan Freeman calling it his favorite movie, as well as being the first that he watched. This led to many sequels, prequels and spinoffs.
Kong has become a massive part of popular culture, with his iconic climb to the top of the Empire State Building popping up in everything from comedy parodies to music videos. He’s also reached the world of gaming, with an official King Kong game released in 2005. Reviews were mixed, with some reviewers feeling that the earlier Godzilla Minus One was more impressive. However, worldwide box office receipts of $570 million meant it was regarded as a success, becoming 2024’s eighth highest-grossing movie.
What Do We Know About the New Movie?
So far, there is little information known about Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is pencilled in for release on March 26, 2027. A short teaser video confirms that it’s entered production. It also shows a Monarch office, where Titan monsters are tracked. We see a call being received and an emergency alert flashing up on the screen.
Fans have noted that the call comes from Sedona in Arizona, which was the setting for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when Godzilla has to face monsters that had been summoned there from all over the planet. Dan Stevens returns as Trapper in the new movies, with Jack O’Connell and Kaitlyn Dever among the other stars. Some reports suggest that SpaceGodzilla could be the villain this time around.
We’ll need to wait to find out what this movie is going to be about, but it seems certain that both of these legendary characters will be back for plenty more adventures in the future, no matter how well-received it is.
