As our eyes are glued to the TV screen, waiting to see the outcome of the Russian invasion of Ukraine; people are wondering: who is Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy? Zelenskyy’s determination to stay with his people in Ukraine instead of leaving while Russian forces near has made him a bit of a hero online. People who had no idea about the 2014 incident in Crimea are suddenly very interested in what’s going on. Small note, Vice News did a whole series on the Russian/Ukraine conflict in 2014 that you can find on YouTube.
What many may not know and may be shocked to know is that Zelenskyy was a comedian and actor prior to taking office three years ago. In fact, his last acting gig was a show called Servant of the People – a satirical comedy that was created and produced Zelenskyy. In the show, Zelenskyy played the main character – a high school teacher who unexpectedly becomes the president of Ukraine. Apparently, he was so popular in this fictional role that it inspired him to run for real political office. And he won. Now, his life and the lives of his people are on the line. This doesn’t seem to have intimidated Zelenskyy, who is literally with the military right now defending Ukraine.
So, where can you watch Servant of the People? Right now, you can find all of the episodes with English subtitles on YouTube. There’s three seasons and 51 episodes. I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this and if you’re like me and interested in learning more about Zelenskyy, I think watching the series that literally inspired real life events is a good start.
