For years, the world has been sounding the alarm about the urgent need to address the dangers of climate change. This pressing issue has sparked a sense of urgency in people to take action to prevent or mitigate the impending crisis. However, the complex and multifaceted nature of this problem can leave individuals feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what actions they can take to make a real difference.

The new documentary produced by National Geographic is a poignant portrayal of Kris Tompkins, a dedicated conservationist who has devoted her life to safeguarding nature and upholding the legacy of her deceased husband, Doug Tompkins. The film, aptly titled Wild Life, is a stunning visual treat that showcases the exceptional directorial vision and cinematography skills of Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. Their ability to capture the breathtaking landscapes of Chile and Argentina is truly remarkable, but what sets their work apart is the way they bring these environments to life as dynamic and thriving ecosystems, rather than just beautiful imagery on the screen. This immersive approach helps the audience appreciate and connect with the Tompkins’ mission of preserving the land for future generations.

At its core, Wild Life is a beautiful ode not only to the natural world but also to the enduring love between Kris and Doug Tompkins. The couple’s extraordinary life, marked by groundbreaking achievements in the outdoor industry and an unwavering commitment to preserving the planet, is a remarkable tale of love, courage, and purpose. The film is a masterpiece of visual storytelling, expertly crafted by Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who deftly weave together the threads of Kris and Doug’s individual journeys and their deep and enduring love for one another. Through their expert lens, the filmmakers bring to life the stunning landscapes of Chile and Argentina, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and to reflect on the profound importance of conservation.

The essence of the documentary lies not only in its focus on conservation but also in the captivating tale of Kris’s journey. Her experiences, both before and after Doug, are a testimony to the highs and lows of life. As one delves deeper, the narrative surprises with its portrayal of a love story that is both vibrant and enchanting. It is not just a tale of how a National Park came to be or the preservation of its land; rather, it is a story that celebrates the passion of two individuals—for each other and for their calling. Their unwavering commitment to their work and the things that bring them joy is beautifully intertwined with their love story, creating a tapestry that is both mesmerizing and awe-inspiring.

There is no doubt when you watch the film and look at it from a Chilean perspective, that the couple’s arrival in this land could be very unsettling for the people of this country. Seeing two wealthy Americans purchase land could have raised questions and concerns. However, the filmmakers adeptly showcase the profound love and reverence that Kris and Doug held not only for the land they aimed to preserve but also for the people who resided there. Their unbridled passion and unwavering dedication to Chilean conservation efforts are beautifully brought to life through the film’s nuanced storytelling, allowing the viewers to gain a holistic understanding of the couple’s far-reaching impact. The documentary stands as a testament to their enduring legacy, revealing how their efforts transcended the boundaries of nationality and financial means, ultimately paving the way for a brighter future for both the land and its inhabitants.

Through their emphasis on the love story between Kris and Doug, Vasarheyli and Chin artfully narrow the scope of the conversation on conservation, keeping the film taut and focused. However, this focus does not detract from the larger dialogue; rather, it centers on two individuals and how their bond can propel lives forward. The intricacies of their adventures and their lives, coupled with the serendipitous manner in which they found each other, make for an enchanting and riveting tale. The Tompkins’ love, as displayed through Kris and the anecdotes shared by her friends, is palpable, leaving a deep and lasting impression on the audience. The passion they shared, not only with each other but also for the land they were committed to preserving, is a reflection of how their actions translated into reality.

Wild Life is a magnificent odyssey that charts the personal triumphs and tribulations of a remarkable individual, Kris. The film masterfully weaves together the threads of her story, revealing the profound impact that the Tompkins’ love story and their deep-rooted connection to the land and people of Chile had on her journey. While Kris’s story takes center stage, the film also showcases the profound importance of conservation and its impact on our vast and wondrous world. Through the lens of Kris’s journey, the film inspires viewers to embark on their own journeys and take action to make a difference in the world around them. With its potent message and powerful storytelling, Wild Life is a compelling reminder that our impact on the world can be immense and transformative, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come.

Wild Life will debut in theaters on April 14, 2023 courtesy of National Geographic. The film will have its broadcast debut on the National Geographic channel on May 25th, and it will stream on Disney+ the next day.
