The Rick and Morty franchise has expanded way beyond the original series, with spinoffs and various games already. Fans have been eager to see a live action film in the universe, with a previous short featuring Christopher Lloyd helping to fuel a lot of hype.

No film has been announced yet, but show creator Justin Roiland has been touting the idea since 2019. Now would be a great time to build on the television show with a silver screen offering.

Rick and Morty Universe is Expanding

Rick and Morty may have started as a somewhat niche offering on Adult Swim, but it quickly grew into a global phenomenon. The series that began in 2013 has now been running for eight seasons, and has won countless awards including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.

The main series could go on indefinitely, and new fans are constantly drawn to it thanks to the franchise’s expansion across other forms of entertainment.

Indeed, branching out into the world of gaming helped boost the series massively, with Pocket Mortys and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality released in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Rick and Morty has even broken into the jackpot casino games market with the official Rick and Morty Strike Back game. This was a shrewd move for the franchise, as the iGaming sector attracts millions of players all over the world.

Zack Synder Interested in Directing Film

Even though Roiland first started talking about a potential film more than five years ago, there has been little development yet and no official announcement. However, there have been rumors that renowned Hollywood director Zack Synder, may be interested in making a movie. Indeed, in a 2021 interview, the Justice League director said that he would be open to the idea of directing a Rick and Morty film.

Synder has been behind some huge pictures in recent years, so having his name attached to a project would be a surefire way to give it a strong chance of success. Synder even featured in a recent episode of the series alongside James Gunn, highlighting how he’s still heavily interested in the franchise. This could be a hint that a film could be around the corner.

Endless Potential for Rick and Morty Universe

The great thing about Rick and Morty, and the reason why the franchise has expanded so greatly, is that there’s endless potential for spinoffs. The sci-fi series covers a wide range of topics, and deals with concepts such as alternative realities and simulation theory. That means that it could easily go off in a range of tangents, and there could even be standalone offerings that exist outside of the traditional canon.

Even though there has been no official announcement about a Rick and Morty film, there are signs that it could happen at some point in the future. As one of the biggest franchises on television, it is primed for additional expansion. The big screen could be the next step for the hit show.
